Project | 11: Make a model engine right case

This is project 11 of 11 in the model engine project series.

Create the final part of the model engine assembly. Model, program, and machine the right half of the engine case.

‌

Module overview

Model and redesign the engine case (right half) while maintaining the mounting locations for the case, crank, cylinder, and internal engine clearances.

Project scenario:
A customer has asked your company to redesign a model engine assembly and to machine a prototype. They have provided engineering drawings of the original. This project requires you to model and redesign the engine case right half (RH) while maintaining the mounting locations for the case, crank, and cylinder as well as internal engine clearances. Use the engineering drawing as a reference for the mounting locations and overall dimensions of the part. The part has symmetry about the crank center location. Consider various stock sizes and shapes to incorporate your unique design and consider any changes to the outside shape should be mirrored over to the engine case left half component as well.

The customer also asked your company to prototype a model engine assembly. They have provided engineering drawings of the original part as well as a neutral CAD model of the engine case RH.

This project requires you to set up and program toolpaths for the engine case RH provided. Begin with the supplied engineering drawing and  CAD model. Use the engineering drawing as a reference to plan tools required and work out any work holding requirements. Consider various stock sizes and shapes and think about the number of operations required to machine the part. Sample process plans, setup sheets, cutting data, and inspection reports are provided but use your judgment, the tools, and machines you have available, and your knowledge to complete the project.

Teaching this project to students in the classroom?
Use this instructor guide to incorporate this and our other model engine projects into your lesson plans. You'll understand how to use CAD and CAM workflows to combine this and other projects into a model engine assembly. Then, machine the model engine using standard stock sizes.
