Project | Make a water pump impeller
Set up, program and machine the impeller of a concept powersports water pump.
Module overview
Set up, program and machine the impeller of a concept powersports water pump.
Project scenario:
A customer has asked your company to machine a new aftermarket water pump design. They supplied the water pump assembly and reference drawings to manufacture each part of the assembly. Review the critical dimensions on the provided detailed drawings and open and review the supplied dataset which contains all parts of the assembly as well as a sample 1” x 2” stock size which each part should fit inside easily.
Sample process plans, setup sheets, cutting data and inspection reports are provided, but use your judgement, the tools, and machines you have available and your knowledge to complete this project and determine how the part should be held during manufacture. You will need to isolate the water pump impeller from the assembly during CAM or derive it into its own design.

Machining best practices
Machining best practices supports you in the CNC machining of the powersports water pump impeller. Review the process plan and cutting data for general guidelines to support you in this project. The sample setup sheet provides information about how the part was machined. Post machining, inspect your part while reviewing the supplied detailed drawing, and populate the inspection report to verify acceptable part tolerances.
