Project practice exercise

Change the appearance of a split face of a design.

After completing the practice exercise, you'll be able to:

  • Create a sketch.
  • Use Split Face.
  • Apply appearances to a single face.
  • Create a rendered image.

Exercise

It appears you don't have a PDF plugin for this browser.

This is a practice exercise video solution

00:05

for this practice.

00:06

We'll start with a supply data set formed car, body concept dash sample dot F three D.

00:12

What we want to talk about is using sketches to

00:14

create split faces so we can use them for appearances

00:18

in this design.

00:19

We want to split the face of the top portion of

00:21

the car body so we can have the appearance of glass.

00:25

So in order to do this, we're going to start a new sketch.

00:28

In this case, I'm going to select our XZ plane

00:31

and we want to create some sort of shape that will represent the glass area.

00:36

I'm going to use a spline

00:38

and I'm going to simply start outside of the boundary. Going to begin to come down,

00:43

go back and I'm going to come up out just before the spoiler

00:47

and then select Ok

00:49

from here, I'm going to finish the sketch.

00:51

Go to modify split face, select the top face of the design,

00:56

select our sketch and we're going to say, okay

00:60

now that we've selected our sketch, let's go ahead and change the appearance.

01:04

This can be done by using a on the keyboard or

01:06

you can go to the individual body in this case,

01:09

body three,

01:10

right click and we can use appearance.

01:12

It's important to note that if you do this from the top level,

01:15

it will include all bodies and components,

01:18

even ones that are hidden such as body extent.

01:21

This can make it difficult for us to make our selection.

01:23

So I'm going to go to body three

01:25

right click and hit appearance

01:27

from here.

01:28

I want to make sure that I change the apply to two faces

01:31

as we won't be applying it to an entire body or component.

01:34

Then we want to select a black paint. If you don't have one in your design

01:39

then you can navigate down to the paint section

01:41

under glossy and find black paint

01:44

because we don't want to use a glass material here. The solid mistake

01:53

if we use the glass material here it would be

01:56

tricky because the inside of this body is solid.

01:59

So we're going to be using a black shiny paint just to represent the difference.

02:03

Going to drag and drop that and you'll notice that

02:05

it's trying to do it over the entire body.

02:08

If you have this problem, try to rotate your design,

02:11

drag and drop again and if you still can't

02:14

do that you can pre select an individual face.

02:17

Then you can drag and drop it on there.

02:19

If you still have problems use your control Z to

02:22

undo the appearance change and hit a on the keyboard.

02:25

Often times hitting a on the keyboard as opposed to

02:28

going into the browser will make it a little bit easier

02:31

Again, select faces.

02:33

Dragon, drop this directly on the area of interest

02:37

now that we have that selected.

02:38

I'm going to close this and go back to a side view just to take a look at the changes

02:43

from here,

02:44

you can navigate over to the render workspace and you can take a

02:47

look at this by rendering an image or doing an in canvas render.

02:51

Remember within canvas renders,

02:52

you are using your local resources and every time

02:55

you rotate the model it will restart the render.

02:58

You can avoid this by going into the render settings and lock the

03:01

view to prevent you from rotating While the in canvas renders processing.

03:06

We're gonna hit,

03:07

stop and navigate back to the design workspace and make

03:10

sure that we save our design before moving on.
