Add data from GIS sources to the InfraWorks model

00:00

PROFESSOR: So in this session, we're

00:02

going to look at just how easy it is to enhance your model,

00:04

and your existing conditions map in your InfraWorks,

00:06

model by utilizing different file sources such as shape

00:10

files, SDF, and images.

00:14

So in InfraWorks, there's a lot of different information

00:17

that you can add to the model whether it's

00:20

a Civil 3D drawing, a 2D autocad drawing, Revit, LandXML,

00:26

SketchUp.

00:28

The three we're going to look at initially

00:30

is going to be a Raster image.

00:31

We're going to use SDF files, and we're

00:33

going to use the majority of the shape files,

00:36

because those are so relevant and can be easily found

00:38

from county state and other resources.

00:42

And there's a few options to bring that into your model,

00:45

we can simply import it, we can drag and drop it such

00:48

as we do in Civil 3D.

00:52

We'll also explore the new ArcGIS Connector

00:55

which allows us to connect ArcGIS online and insert data.

00:60

Once we get that information in, we'll

01:01

look at stlylizing and analyzing that data.

01:04

So let's move over to our own InfraWorks model,

01:06

and see how it's done.

01:10

So we're here inside our InfraWorks model.

01:11

We utilize the model builder to give us that canvas.

01:14

That starting point for our model,

01:16

and we want to start adding information to it.

01:19

So when I come up to the top left,

01:21

I'm going to choose the InfraWorks icon.

01:24

And then I'm going to choose create and manage your model.

01:26

And the first option you see here is data sources.

01:29

This will show us what data sources are currently

01:32

in the drawing.

01:34

We can then select here to add additional data sources.

01:38

We can add them by file, by folder,

01:41

and you can see all the different options

01:42

that we have to add data into our model.

01:46

I'm going to go over to parcels here in file explorer.

01:53

And these are just shape files, so you

01:54

can see we have a bunch of information

01:56

that we can put into this model.

01:57

I'm going to select the accessor parcels,

01:59

then I'm going to simply select the shape file drag,

02:03

and drop it on the screen.

02:06

And this brings up the data source configuration

02:09

dialog box.

02:10

We have to tell it a type, a shape file can be anything.

02:13

It can be a road, it can be a pipe,

02:15

it can be other utilities, it can be parcels,

02:18

and it can be parking lots.

02:19

It can be a handful of things here.

02:22

So we have to first tell it what it is.

02:24

And in this case, we chose the accessory parcels

02:27

the tax ID parcels.

02:28

We're going to tell it's a parcel.

02:31

Second thing you want to do, is we have a style.

02:34

You have to assign a style to everything

02:35

so I'm going just select the pencil icon here and assign

02:39

a style.

02:43

There's a lot of pre-built styles in here.

02:45

You can customize your materials, colors, fills,

02:48

outline, so forth.

02:49

We're going to use out of the box here.

02:51

I'm going to choose a thick yellow line so that really

02:54

displays our parcels.

02:57

It's like that.

02:58

I'm going to hit, OK.

03:00

We have several tabs across the top

03:02

here, Geolocation is going to tell us the location

03:04

or if it has a coordinate system assigned,

03:06

we're going to allow it just to come in that way.

03:09

The source, we want to drape it.

03:10

We do want to drape that across our model.

03:14

And then if I brought in the entire county, which I did,

03:17

I don't want the entire thing to come in.

03:19

I want to clip it down to the extent of the model.

03:21

So I'm going to choose clip to model extent.

03:26

Once I'm done with, I'm going to simply select

03:28

closing refresh at the bottom, and it's

03:33

going to bring in that information,

03:34

the tax ID parcels for this canvas area here.

03:39

It's going to show kind of the surrounding boundary lines.

03:48

And there we are we now know the property lines or the boundary

03:51

lines which we have to work within.

03:54

So let's add some more information to that.

03:57

Let's go back to our file explorer,

03:59

and in here I have a shape file for parks.

04:02

Maybe I want to know where all parks and public spaces.

04:04

I'm going to select that.

04:06

Drag and drop just as I did before.

04:10

This type I'm going to tell it's a coverage area.

04:14

And in the styles here, we have some pre-built ones

04:17

we could do zoning.

04:19

There's a pre-built one here with grass.

04:21

I'm going to just select that one, hit, OK.

04:25

On the sauce tab, I'm just going to drop it, and clip

04:28

to model extent, and hit close and refresh.

04:32

So I now know where are some parks, where some open space

04:36

that surrounds my development.

04:39

Let's continue with a couple more.

04:42

We're going to look at the property boundary.

04:44

So if someone gave us a boundary maybe a survey

04:46

or gave you a shape file that's the boundary

04:48

we want to work within.

04:50

I'm going to drag and drop that went in as well.

04:59

Let's drop it on the screen.

05:03

Let's tell it this is a parcel.

05:06

Let's give it a real style, maybe I

05:08

want to get outside of this option

05:09

go to parent here, project's site

05:14

and for now we'll use thick white.

05:19

White, OK.

05:21

Let's make sure we drape that, and hit close and refresh.

05:27

OK, so I now know that my project boundaries

05:30

is that I have selected.

05:36

OK, so it's easy to drag and drop.

05:37

Now what about buildings?

05:39

A lot of times you don't have buildings in there.

05:41

You just have a flat canvas.

05:43

You want to add some sustenance to this model.

05:47

You can use a shape file as well for that.

05:49

You can use a lot of different options,

05:51

we're going to use a shape file.

05:54

Let's go back to our data set.

05:59

And in this case I have an SDF file and Autodesk SDF file.

06:04

So maybe that was exported out of Civil 3D.

06:07

I'm going to drop that in.

06:10

I'm going to tell it in this case it's a building.

06:14

We're going to drape it as well.

06:18

We can give it a roof height.

06:19

We can adjust that.

06:20

We can give it a roof slope so maybe let's just put in 12.

06:24

There are some styles here that we can do base color.

06:27

It's going to get a random facade and a random roof color.

06:30

So simply drug and drop it in there,

06:32

give it a little bit of information.

06:34

Close and refresh, and you can see that based on that,

06:37

I now have these buildings within my model starting

06:40

to look a little bit more realistic.

06:43

And we can continue and add rows.

06:46

We could add a lot of information.

06:48

Do you see how just easy it is to bring in that information?

06:53

Now something newer and InfraWorks we want to look at

06:56

is adding an ArcGIS data source.

06:59

So if you have ArcGIS online, you

07:01

can simply add this connection.

07:03

So I'm going to choose add ArcGIS data source from above,

07:13

and it's going to log me into my existing ArcGIS online account,

07:18

where based on my InfraWorks model

07:21

it knows approximately where I am

07:23

and what information I have for that.

07:26

So in this case, I have some utilities here on the left,

07:33

and I also have soils information for this site.

07:39

I want to add those to my model so I

07:41

can select numerous items here and then here

07:45

at the bottom left choose add to my design project.

07:57

And it may take a moment to add that information,

08:00

but you can see that I now have soils information for my site

08:04

and all the surrounding sites, which

08:06

allows me to do further analysis on my development parcel

08:09

to make sure it's the right site for me.

01:06

and see how it's done.

01:54

01:56

01:57

I'm going to select the accessor parcels,

01:59

then I'm going to simply select the shape file drag,

02:03

02:06

And this brings up the data source configuration

02:09

dialog box.

02:10

We have to tell it a type, a shape file can be anything.

02:13

It can be a road, it can be a pipe,

02:15

it can be other utilities, it can be parcels,

02:18

02:57

It's like that.

02:58

I'm going to hit, OK.

03:00

03:04

or if it has a coordinate system assigned,

03:06

we're going to allow it just to come in that way.

03:59

04:02

04:04

04:25

04:28

05:43

06:24

There are some styles here that we can do base color.

06:27

It's going to get a random facade and a random roof color.

06:30

06:32

give it a little bit of information.

06:34

Close and refresh, and you can see that based on that,

06:37

06:40

08:04

to make sure it's the right site for me.
