Create a model within minutes using the InfraWorks Model Builder

SHAWN HERRING: Selecting the right site for a building

00:04

can make a big difference in the cost of the project.

00:07

Selecting a site with transportation access,

00:09

enough spacing for parking, and appropriate building codes

00:12

and zoning can determine if the project gets approval or not.

00:16

In this module, we'll learn just how

00:18

easy it is to use Model Builder within InfraWorks,

00:21

then we'll connect to some GIS data

00:23

and run proper Jesus analysis before selecting the site.

00:30

Model Builder allows you to quickly and easily create

00:33

models based on specific area of your choice.

00:37

It's going to bring in roads and railways, building information,

00:40

imagery from Microsoft Bing, elevation data, so terrain

00:44

data for your site, and different bodies of water

00:48

amongst other things.

00:51

InfraWorks Model Builder is very simple to use.

00:54

Yeah, there are several different ways

00:55

to select that information.

00:58

You can simply draw a rectangle, you

01:01

can draw a polygon-shaped area, you can also

01:06

import a boundary, such as a shape file,

01:09

to establish your model.

01:12

So let's look at how easy Model Builder is

01:14

to create our first model.

01:15

OK, we're now here in InfraWorks, and at the top

01:18

you'll see Model Builder.

01:19

So along the top we've got a Model Builder, New model,

01:23

and Open a model.

01:24

We're going to simply choose Model Builder.

01:28

Here, we can zoom in to an area that we want to see.

01:30

We can search and address.

01:32

I'm going to search for this one here, Littleton, Colorado.

01:39

OK, that's going to get us in there close.

01:42

We're going to zoom in to our area of choice here,

01:47

and I'm going to select the Polygon option.

01:49

Draw a polygon to select an area of interest,

01:53

and I'm going to bring in this model for approximately

01:57

this area.

02:01

So once I've double-clicked that, I can then

02:03

enter a model name.

02:04

So I'm going to call this Redtail,

02:08

and I'm going to simply select Create

02:09

Model at the bottom right.

02:13

That's going to prepare a model.

02:15

You'll receive an email within a few minutes,

02:17

and your model is going to be available for you to download.

02:20

So when your model is ready, you'll see it here

02:23

in your home screen, so I'm going

02:24

to select on the Redtail model.

02:27

It's going to ask you, where would you like to store this,

02:29

whether you're using BIM 360 or locally.

02:33

You have the option there now to store that in either location.

02:36

I'm going to just choose Local.

02:39

Let me allow the model to download and open.

02:42

Typically, it just takes a minute.

02:45

Once that model is open, you'll see on your screen

02:48

that area that you selected.

02:50

So if we take a quick look at the results,

02:53

you'll see that we have roadways brought in,

02:57

we have some of the building outlines,

02:59

we have some trails and stuff that sometimes come in,

03:02

as well as water features, and terrain.

03:05

So within a matter of minutes, you can select an area,

03:09

have your site downloaded, and have usable actionable data

03:12

that we can then supplement with additional information.
