Often, you need to make design changes to CAD files that were imported from other CAD programs
00:09
and do not have a parametric design history.
00:12
In this case, you can use direct modeling to make the desired changes in Fusion.
00:19
Consider this 3D model of a reciprocating Saw Body.
00:23
If you look at the Timeline, you can see that there is no parametric history,
00:27
and in the Browser, there are only two bodies, with no sketches, assemblies, or workplanes.
00:35
While there is no parametric geometry that can be used to modify this design,
00:39
you can make all the necessary changes using direct modeling.
00:44
Start by moving one of the vertical supports.
00:48
In the Browser, click the visibility icon to hide Body40.
00:53
On the canvas, select the four faces of the second support from the front—two on each side—then right-click and select Move/Copy.
01:02
Now, click the right arrow manipulator and in this case, drag the support to the left.
01:10
If you want, you can select a pivot point.
01:13
In the Move/Copy dialog, click Set Pivot, then click to place the pivot point.
01:20
In the dialog, click Done to confirm.
01:24
Now, you can rotate the whole support about this pivot.
01:28
When you finish moving the support, click OK.
01:32
You can also delete model geometry.
01:36
Select the four faces on this support again, then right-click and select Delete.
01:43
Deleting the four faces deletes the entire support.
01:47
You can use direct modeling to easily make changes to other elements of the 3D model,
01:52
such as the screw post.
01:54
To change the length of the post, select the front face, then right-click and select Press Pull.
02:02
Drag the arrow manipulator to extend the length.
02:06
You can use Press Pull to create different features, based on the geometry selected.
02:12
Select the outer edge, then right-click and select Press Pull to apply a fillet by dragging the arrow manipulator.
02:20
Select the outer face of the cylinder and use Press Pull to change the diameter—again, by dragging the manipulator.
02:29
The internal face of the cylinder is not altered, because it was not selected.
02:36
Now, select an interior edge, then right-click and select Press Pull.
02:42
As you drag the manipulator, Fusion applies a fillet—this time, by adding material to round the edge.
02:50
If you then select the fillet face and press Delete, the fillet geometry is removed.
02:56
To change the diameter of a hole, select the inside face, then right-click and select Press Pull.
03:04
Drag the manipulator to change the diameter, and then click OK.
03:10
You can even use direct modeling to move the position of the entire supporting plate running through the middle of the casing.
03:18
First, carefully select all the faces—top, side, and underside.
03:24
You may need to zoom in to make sure you select the small face between the post and the support.
03:31
With all faces selected, right-click and select Move/Copy.
03:37
Now, you can drag the arrow manipulator to move the plate to the desired location.
03:43
Fusion maintains the geometry of the far side edge face against the inside face of the outer casing.
03:50
It is helpful that the Timeline tracks all the changes you make.
03:55
If you need to, right-click any feature to edit it, or you can simply make direct edits.
