In Autodesk Tandem, specifying data requirements for assets is a straightforward, three-step process.

First, you select or create your own Classification system.

Second, you define the Parameters to be captured for a given asset type or group.

And third, you create and apply a facility template with the defined classification system and applied parameters.

After logging in to your account, navigate to the Manage page, where you see tabs that correspond with each of these steps:

Facility Templates, and then Classes and Parameters, both of which feed data into the facility template.

Select the Classes tab, where you can expand a drop-down of all of the classification systems that are available to this account.

Classification systems are used to define your asset types and organize them in a hierarchy.

Systems labeled built-in are preloaded industry standards, and Masterformat is the Tandem default.

In the table, you can expand each item to see the different levels nested within the system.

For a project with certain data requirements, you can upload your own system,

but it is recommended that you begin by selecting one of the systems in the drop-down.

For example, if you select Simple Categories, and then click Download, this creates an Excel template that you can open and customize.

In Excel, make the necessary edits, ensuring that you do not change the headers.

Here, a selection of levels and a description are changed.

When you are finished, save your changes, and then navigate back to Tandem.

To upload the custom system, click Add Classification System, enter a Name, and then click to select the Excel file.

When you click Open, if you see a conflict, you can Delete the file, and make the necessary changes and reupload the file again.

Click Add to upload the validated file.

Next, switch to the Parameters tab to define the properties that you want to capture for a given asset type or group.

Again, you can either start with preloaded standards,

or, if you have specific data requirements, you can create your own custom Classification System.

Tandem includes a library of the parameters used most often, and these can be accessed by toggling the library on.

As you see here, these parameters have a Source of Library.

If you toggle the Library off, then only the custom parameters in your account appear in the list,

as indicated by a Source of My Parameter.

To create a parameter, click Add Parameter.

In the Add Parameter dialog, enter a Name, such as “Date Installed”.

Then, select a Category, which can be helpful in projects with hundreds of parameters, for filtering purposes.

In this case, select General.

Next, set the Context.

Element or Type are used most often, and here, you can leave Element selected.

Optionally, you can add a Description, and finally, set the Data Type, which is a required field.

Here, select Date / Time, with a Unit of Date, Time.

Once the parameters are defined, you are ready to create a facility template.

You can either follow and use industry standards as a starting point, or you can build your own.

From the left panel, switch to the Facility Templates tab, and then click Add Facility Template.

Enter a Name, and in the Classification drop-down, select the Autodesk Learning system created previously.

Include a Description, if needed, and then click Add.

Now, you see the classification system on the left and an area for assigned parameters on the right.

Select a classification, and then click Assign Parameters.

In the Parameters dialog, select the parameters that you want to apply.

Note that you can use the drop-down to toggle between Name, Category, and Assigned.

This is where using categories can be helpful;

for example, if you are looking to apply an entire category to one classification, then having categories assigned can speed up the process.

When you are finished applying parameters, click Done.

Next to the classification system, you see that four of four parameters are applied.

To apply these same parameters to multiple classifications, click Copy To, select the desired classifications, and then click Done.

These three classifications now have the same four parameters applied.

When you are finished assigning parameters, click Update.

Now, you can apply the facility template.

From the Facilities page, select the facility, and then click the Assets tab.

In this case, the wrong template is applied, so click Delete facility template, and then click Yes to confirm.

Next, click Apply Template, select the template that you want to use, and then click Apply.

With the facility template applied, you are ready to start selecting and tagging assets.
