You'll almost always want to add an outer boundary to your surfaces.
00:07
Outer boundaries define the outer extents of the surface.
00:12
In prospector select the existing ground surface from the services collection
00:17
right? Click on it
00:18
and select rebuild automatic.
00:20
This is a toggle option and when it's on the surface
00:23
will update automatically when any changes are detected to its definition,
00:29
expand the surface definition prospector,
00:31
right? Click on boundaries and choose add
00:34
set the name to alter,
00:37
make sure the type is set to outer.
00:40
We'll explore other options later,
00:44
a boundary can either be destructive or non destructive.
00:48
A destructive boundary will destroy or delete
00:51
any triangle side that is outside the boundary or is crossed by the boundary.
00:56
The result is that only whole triangles inside the boundary are preserved.
01:02
A non destructive boundary will trim any crossing triangles to the boundary line
01:07
and delete any whole triangles outside the boundary.
01:12
In this example, we are using a non destructive boundary
01:15
and the mid ordinate distance is set to 10 ft.
01:19
When I apply this boundary,
01:21
the surface edge is now tessellated,
01:24
clearly triangle sides cannot be curved.
01:27
So there'll always be straight edges on your surface boundary.
01:30
The tessellation is controlled by the mid ordinate distance.
01:34
If the mid ordinate distance is small,
01:37
then additional triangles will be created to ensure the setting is honored
01:43
for our boundary select non destructive brake line
01:46
and leave the mid ordinate distance set to 1 ft
01:50
click. OK. And in the drawing, pick the white poly line as shown for the boundary,
01:56
the polyline remains linked to the surface.
01:59
If you delete it,
01:60
then you're deleting the surface boundary and the
02:02
surface will revert back to its original size.
02:06
Use grips to edit the boundary.
02:08
When you change the polyline,
02:09
the surface rebuilds automatically and resizes to the bounding entity
02:14
in this area. Here we have a polyline that represents a building outline.
02:20
We don't want to display contours inside our building.
02:24
In prospector under the existing ground,
02:27
there's an item labeled masks,
02:30
masks are not boundaries,
02:32
they can be likened to a wipe out in a
02:34
cat.
02:35
Unlike a boundary
02:37
triangles inside a mask are not deleted from the surface.
02:40
They're just not displayed,
02:42
right? Click on masks and select crate mask,
02:46
select the building poly line in the drawing and press enter
02:50
in the crate mass dialogue, set the mask type to inside and then click OK.
02:57
Contours inside the mask are now hidden
02:59
but the surface is still there inside the building.
03:02
And if I were to perform a volume calculation,
03:05
it would still include triangles inside the mask.
03:09
Now let's create some boundaries for this lake and island
03:14
in Prospector, right? Click on boundaries and choose. Add
03:20
name this boundary. Lake
03:22
set the type to hide.
03:25
We don't want contours inside the lake.
03:28
Make sure that nondestructive brake line is selected,
03:32
accept the default mid ordinate distance and click. Ok.
03:36
Pick the outer lake polyline
03:38
and the surface is now trimmed to our lake.
03:42
Add another boundary and name it island.
03:46
This time set the type to show
03:48
again, it will be non destructive and the mid ordinate distance is 1 ft
03:53
click. OK. And pick the island polyline.
03:57
The surface is regenerated inside the island.
04:01
You can nest,
04:02
hide and show boundaries
04:04
as many times as you want.
04:06
If I review the surface in the object viewer,
04:09
you can see the surface still exists inside the
04:11
mask but has been deleted inside the lake.
04:15
Delete the lake and island poly lines in the drawing and the surface will rebuild.
