A slab can be attached to a structural foundation slab or floor.
00:08
The slap edge geometry is defined within a profile family
00:11
which allows for a wide range of shapes to be accommodated
00:15
in the
00:15
image shown to the right.
00:16
You can see that a slab edge has been added to represent a thickening.
00:20
The slab edges can have a vertical and horizontal
00:23
offset from the horizontal edge that you select.
00:26
It is worth noting that a slab edge cannot host
00:29
reinforcement bar and will not have an analytical model.
00:32
If this is a requirement, then it is recommended that you use a structural beam.
00:37
However, for simple slab edges, you can host a reinforcement bar into the slab.
00:43
In this video, we're going to use the slab edge tool to add some
00:47
shavers around the edge of the core
00:49
and also provide a local thickening on our level one slab.
00:53
Let's begin by rotating the 3d foundation view.
00:56
So we can see the core in a bit more detail
00:60
to help us see the slay bit. We're going to remove the visibility of walls.
01:04
Let's select one of the walls
01:06
and on the view control toolbar, we'll select temporary hide, isolate
01:10
and hide the category.
01:12
You can now clearly see the edge of the slab.
01:14
This is where we're going to add our shamp for details.
01:18
Before we can add the sham.
01:19
For details,
01:20
we will first need to load in the profile that we're going to use within our slab edge
01:25
to do this. We'll select the inserts ribbon
01:28
and on the inserts ribbon, we'll select load family
01:32
in the load family dialog box. Let's go ahead and select the profile M 03-03.
01:38
Shan for profile underscore RVT 2021
01:42
we can then go ahead and select open.
01:45
So that Shan for profile that we've just
01:47
loaded in will now be available for slab edges
01:51
to launch the slab edge tool. We will first select the structure ribbon
01:55
and on the structure ribbon under the foundation panel,
01:57
we'll select the structural slab pull down
01:60
and select floor slab edge
02:02
in the properties pallet in the type selector. You'll note here.
02:05
We currently have a type called slab edge thickened 24 inch by 12 inch.
02:10
Let's select edit type
02:12
and in the type properties dialog box, we'll select duplicate.
02:16
We'll give this a type name Sham
02:18
for four inch
02:20
and then go ahead and select OK
02:22
for the profile. We'll now switch this from slab edge thickened to Sham.
02:27
And you'll see here. We have two types.
02:29
In this case, we're going to select the four inch sham.
02:32
We'd also check that the material is set to
02:34
concrete normal weight for K si which it is.
02:37
And we can then go ahead and select, OK.
02:41
In order to place the slab edge, we'll select the edge of the slab opening.
02:45
And you can see here as we go around and pick the slab opening edge,
02:49
you can see the slab edge is applied.
02:51
Notice here,
02:52
we have tools to flip the horizontal and vertical axis of the slab edge if required.
02:58
And we'd also continue to add the champ
02:60
around this edge here as well. So we can pick these edges
03:03
and we'll just rotate the model just to
03:05
confirm that the slab edges are placed correctly
03:08
and that's looking good.
03:10
OK. Let's exit the slab
03:11
edge family by selecting the modify tool,
03:15
we'll now reset the temporary hide isolate.
03:17
So on the view control toolbar, let's go ahead and select temporary hide, isolate
03:21
and reset, temporary hide isolate.
03:25
And now we can rotate the 3D foundation view round.
03:27
So we can see the top of the structure.
03:30
And what we're going to do now is add a slab
03:32
which is going to create a local thickening in this area here.
03:36
So once again, we'll start by loading in a profile that we want to use.
03:40
So we go to the insert ribbon
03:42
and on the insert ribbon, we'll select load family
03:46
in the low family dialog box.
03:48
Let's go ahead and select M 03-03 thickening profile underscore RVT 2021
03:56
and click open,
03:58
we'll then repeat the slab edge tool.
03:60
So in this example, I'm going to right mouse, click,
04:02
go to recent commands and then go ahead and select floor slab edge
04:07
in the properties panel in the type selector.
04:09
You'll know that we've got our last lab that we created.
04:12
Let's go ahead and select edit type,
04:14
we'll duplicate
04:16
and we call this one slab thickening,
04:20
then click. OK.
04:22
Of course. Now we can swap our profile. So we go to the pull down menu here.
04:26
And in this example, we're going to choose the profile M 03-03 thickening profile.
04:32
And here we're going to use the 24 inch by 12 inch.
04:36
We can then select, OK.
04:38
And now to place this, we'll select this lower edge of the slab.
04:44
OK?
04:44
Let's exit the slab edge command by going
04:46
to the context ribbon and selecting modifier.
04:50
What we now want to do is give this slab edge a
04:52
horizontal offset to place it 11 ft away from its current edge
04:57
to do this, we can select the slab edge.
04:59
And if we now look at the instance parameters in the properties paddock,
05:03
we can see here, we have a vertical profile offset
05:06
and a horizontal profile offset
05:08
for the horizontal profile offset. Let's type in 11 ft.
05:14
We'll now go ahead and view this slab edge in a plain view
05:17
in the project browser under structural plans.
05:20
Let's go ahead and open up the top of foundation.
05:24
We can now clearly see our slab
05:26
edge,
05:27
we need to now edit the length of this slab.
05:29
This needs to terminate on grid C
05:32
to do this.
05:33
If we zoom in,
05:34
you can now see here we have these special grips to allow
05:36
us to adjust the segment end at the start and the end.
05:39
So I'm just going to drag this back until it intersects with grid C.
05:43
And that's now set our slab edge length.
05:46
OK. Let's just now review that in 3D.
05:49
So we'll go back and switch to our 3D foundation view.
05:52
We'll orbit around
05:53
and now we can clearly see our champers in place and also our local thickening.
05:59
OK.
05:60
So in summary,
06:00
you can see that the slab edge tool is very useful for adding champers around the
06:04
edges of slabs if required and also for
06:07
adding thickening underneath slabs as we discussed earlier.
06:10
This cannot host reinforcement bar or appear in an analytical model.
06:14
But if that was a requirement, we could have used a beam instead of the slab edge.
