Autodesk’s CAD and CAM Solutions are a Pivotal Part of our Success

Customer challenge

Meyer Tool & Manufacturing, Inc. has been servicing the particle accelerator industry for over 50 years. During that time, they have emerged as a trusted manufacturing companion to some of the biggest brands and research institutes across the country. They pride ourselves on our ability to build the impossible, turning the most complex of designs into real world applications. In order to use the best tools to their advantage they looked for comprehensive software solutions for their CAD and CAM needs. Along with the software capabilities, they chose NexGenCAM as partner for their support and services because of their proven dependability.

Project goals

Finding a software workflow that would provide the best compatibility between different departments during the product life cycle was their focus. Feasibility and reducing downtime due to technical issues and minimizing the learning curve for new employees was also important. Finally, Meyer Tool & Manufacturing wanted to look for a solution that would grow with the company’s demands and have the ability to adapt and evolve.

Solution

We have always worked with Autodesk AutoCAD but in order to be able to explore the realm of 3D CAD we decided to go with Autodesk Inventor. The features and performance of Inventor allow us to work with and manipulate large assemblies with hundreds of components. To handle the manufacturing demands we went with Autodesk Fusion 360. Fusion 360 serves all our CAM needs: it was fast to deploy on the floor, highly intuitive to use but still packed a ton of functionality. To cater to some of the more complex and demanding tool paths we needed for our 5-axis machine, we went with Autodesk PowerMill. This highly effective CAM software provides the ultimate solution to tough jobs requiring advanced simultaneous 5 axis and automated macros. With NexGenCAM being at our side, we have access to a highly knowledgeable team that can get us up and running within a few hours.

Business outcome

Today, they run all 3 software seamlessly across their design and manufacturing phases. The family of products ended up being the most feasible path to their successful workflow. They have reduced our product life cycle time from inception to completion by around 40% over the past few years. Programming their parts with Autodesk Fusion 360 has cut their programming time by half compared to programming at the machine tool control. With Autodesk PowerMill they have cut set up time in half as well by eliminating the number of different set ups for multi positional and 5 axis machining.

Conclusion

Running the complete suite of Autodesk products has provided the ultimate design and manufacturing solution. They have seen a massive technological advancement in their workflow compared to their previous methods. They hope to keep developing their workflow and using Autodesk’s CAD and CAM solutions are a pivotal part of their success.

Rapidly Increase R&D and Production

In business since 1994, Aimpro Tactical grew up with traditional CAD/CAM processes and machining techniques. In 2018, the team developed a new product, now covered by 2 US Patents, from which they built a prototype and completed small batches on a Prototrac DPM. Using a separate third party vendor to draw/model in Solidworks and then another to CAM out code in Mastercam or other CAM software, the company moved at what now seems like glacial speed. The challenge was to grow the product line from one specific application and dramatically increase the number of product lines and the number of units produced. This continues to grow and the team is expanding their machining and production capabilities each month. During this time, they are maintaining high-end quality and tight tolerances while minimizing scrap parts and set up times. The company's end user customers expect and demand the highest quality and Aimpro Tactical is committed to delivering only that.

Bringing Capabilities In House To Streamline Processes

Elliott Guitars is a small boutique guitar shop that has been in business for over 16 years. We cater to musicians who expect more from the quality their guitars than the average player. As builders and musicians ourselves, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our designs and components to build the very best instruments possible. Several years ago, this process led us to the purchase of our CNC machine. In our search for better CNC design software, we were impressed by the products offered by NexGenCAM.
