Dillon Transitions AutoCAD Users to Revit with IMAGINiT's ProductivityNOW Platform

Dillon Transitions AutoCAD Users to Revit with IMAGINiT's ProductivityNOW Platform

Customer challenge

For the past 10 years, many of Dillon’s 500+ architects, engineers, and designers have used Autodesk Revit software to create, edit, and review 3D models. Today, one of the company’s goals is to transition everyone still creating 2D models in Autodesk AutoCAD to Autodesk Revit in order to:

  • Align Dillon with the upcoming industry standard
  • Ensure employees are skilled in the latest technologies
  • Cut down on drafting time
  • Reduce the chance of manual errors
  • Easily explore design options, such as color and texture
  • “Walk” customers through 3D models
  • Streamline the creation/updating of Quantity Takeoffs
  • Deliver accurate Building of Materials to contractors

“We know change is difficult,” said Shannon Zorgdrager, Associate, Dillon Consulting “To make sure all the AutoCAD users were excited about this change, we needed to clearly present the value of Revit, make sure they understood how it could make them better at their jobs, and give them the training they needed to quickly get up to speed and use it efficiently.”

“Since we were going to be knee-deep in discussions about Revit, we decided to take the conversations a step further and get more familiar with the contents and capabilities of the Autodesk AEC collection, which we subscribed to a few years ago,” said Shannon.

Project goals

When Dillon first started using Revit, IMAGINiT provided in-person training for several key users, who today are the company’s power users that provide guidance to others. During the 3-day training sessions as well as the follow-up refresher courses, the IMAGINiT team demonstrated their commitment to ensuring all attendees had the knowledge and skills needed to use the software in real-world situations.

“Those trainings also launched the relationship we have with our IMAGINiT account manager, who contacts us regularly, makes sure we are aware of Autodesk updates, and brings new and relevant products and services to our attention,” said Shannon.

Solution

Shannon reached out to her IMAGINiT account manager to discuss the transition to Revit and the need for more information about the about the AEC Collection. Together they developed a solution that included:

  • AEC Collection Deep Dive – The IMAGINiT account manager would organize a meeting with 15 Dillon employees and software experts from both IMAGINiT and Autodesk to review all the products included in the collection and how Dillon can leverage those tools to streamline workflows, enhance designs, improve collaboration, and more.
  • ProductivityNOW – IMAGINiT’s eLearning and Support platform, which Dillon would use to:
    • Give all employees access to all Autodesk content, including self-paced training materials, how-to videos, technical white papers, and more
    • Provide a central location for Dillon documentation, including onboarding information, company standards, and custom workflows
    • Curate Autodesk and Dillon content for specific groups within the company as well as individual projects
    • Provide unlimited access to IMAGINiT’s certified technical support team

Business outcome

Dillon is on its way to transitioning all its AutoCAD users to Revit, and ProductivityNOW is the main training platform.

“ProductivityNOW provides us with a monthly report of which users have logged in, what they clicked on, and what they searched for,” said Shannon. “I have reached out to users for their thoughts on the platforms, and all are incredibly positive.”

ProductivityNOW users stated that they appreciated the following features and benefits:

  • Convenience of self-paced Autodesk learning courses
  • Supporting videos to support the course content
  • Ability to review course material as often as needed
  • Speed at which they can find the correct answers to workflow questions
  • Centralized location of all training material
  • Centralized location of all material needed for a specific group or project
  • Ease of getting answers from the IMAGINiT support team

Conclusion

Dillon’s designers and engineers are now more aware of the software solutions within the AEC Collection. “Since everyone in the company has access to all the content in ProductivityNOW, employees can explore the capabilities of the different software, determine which would help them do their jobs better, and request a license,” said Shannon. “This license management helps ensure that people have the tools they need and that the company maintains the right number of licenses.”

“Our relationship with IMAGINiT has been incredibly valuable,” said Shannon. “We are confident that they are looking after our best interests, whether recommending a solution, implementing software, training our people, or providing support,” said Shannon. “We save time, because we don’t need to talk with other providers, and we rest easy, because we know we are traveling down the right path.”

C2AE Trusts IMAGINiT with BIM Management Services

For several years, the Building division within C2AE successfully followed a BIM-management-by-committee approach to making decisions on procedures, standards, and best practices. The company’s designers and engineers would meet in person or online, discuss the options, and determine next steps. As the company’s team grew in size and experience level, coming to a consensus became more difficult. C2AE recognized the need to select one person to be the point person responsible for gathering and evaluating all the opinions and deciding which to select and implement.

Swinterton Delivers Value and Achieves ROI with Leica RTC360 Scanner

When renovating buildings, Swinerton starts with as-built measurements provided by clients. Because those drawings rarely include updates, Swinerton relied on their architects to manually measure spaces, put those measurements into Autodesk Revit, and provide PDFs of the information to the designers, who used them as the starting point for renovations. Swinerton started getting laser scans of structures at the beginning of renovation projects using external companies to perform the scanning. “The laser scanners led to great improvements,” said Matt Zwetzig, VD&C Manager, Swinerton. “Measurements were gathered in a fraction of the time, teams knew they were working with accurate information, plans were created faster, correct parts were ordered the first time, and the parts fit as expected.” With business growing and timelines shortening, Matt determined it was time to compare costs for hiring external providers versus purchasing a scanner and completing the work in house.

Massilly North America Automates Processes with Fusion 360 Manage

In 2015, Massilly North America reached out to Autodesk for support on their product lifecycle management (PLM) software, Fusion 360 Manage (previously known as Autodesk PLM 360), which is critical to the company’s day-to-day operations. Autodesk connected Massilly North America with IMAGINiT, and the IMAGINiT PLM team answered questions on specific issues, consulted on workflow improvements, and shared best practices.
