Success Story
How do you find the right digital platform that supports the ambitions for the future? And how do you give a more than 100-year-old machine factory new life? These are some of the initial questions the CEO at Povl Møllers Maskinfabrik, Rune Friis Eriksen, has faced.
Povl Møllers Maskinfabrik primary business area is lubrication systems and press machines. They are one of the only companies in Denmark who has experience in building mechanical pressing machines with up to 300 tons of pressing force, and therefore knows how to construct parts that can withhold under high stress - including axles, bronze bearings, connecting rods, etc.
Since Rune was employed back in 2019, first as technical manager, and today as director, the ambitions have grown together with the ambition of creating a profitable and modern machine factory.
The main aim for the company was that Povl Møllers Maskinfabrik wanted to be a significant player on the market for especially larger machined parts. To realise this ambition, it was necessary to invest in new software and move away from the manual programming.
CEO, Rune Friis Eriksen, elaborates:
"We assessed that rather than learning how to program our three existing CNC machines in three different ways, it was smarter and easier for our employees to only have one system to deal with - for all three machines."
In order to upgrade their production and make it more digital, Poul Møllers Maskinfabrik chose to invest in Autodesk Fusion - a unified platform that ties all facets of a production company together – i.a. design, construction, simulation, production and processing.
"The choice fell on Autodesk Fusion because it seemed like the right solution for our machine factory. And we also experienced this to be true after the implementation,” Rune Friis Eriksen states.
Today the manual processes are a thing of the past.
"Today, our mechanical engineer designs the items on his computer. When the items are ready for production, he transfers the file to Autodesk Fusion, after which employees access them out in production. They add the toolpaths in Autodesk Fusion, which contains data about where to mill, turn, etc. And that information is then sent directly to the CNC-machine," Rune explains.
NTI A/S has supported by making and customizing a post processor, so the CNC-machines in interaction with Autodesk Fusion know exactly what to do.
The implementation of Autodesk Fusion has positioned Povl Møllers Maskinfabrik as a strong partner and sub-supplier for processing machined parts and has contributed to a wide range of advantages for the machine factory in Borup.
"We are and will be much more efficient in our way of working and we make fewer mistakes. With Autodesk Fusion, the CNC machines have become easier to program, which has meant that the programming time has of course been significantly reduced. In addition, we can program while they are running, so that we can keep production going 24/7," Rune, explains.
Povl Møllers Masinfabrik expects to increase the use of Fusion in the future, where Rune especially sees a great advantage in utilizing the possibility of simulating the processing time. This would, for example, make it easier to set the price and make offers to customers. Overall, there is great value in working more digitally – a value that Povl Møllers Maskinfabrik has also noticed.
"It has also been important to have a great sparring partner who can provide the support we need. And this means that today we are ready to take on even more tasks and utilize the versatility we possess with professional equipment for e.g. turning, milling, surface grinding and circular grinding and thereby create a profitable and competitive machine factory," Rune concludes.
