Bridging the gap between CAD and CNC

PowerMill Gave Us Back Programming Control

PowerMill Gave Us Back Programming Control

Customer challenge

Here at Daedalus Design and Production, 90% of the work they do is theater. From sets to scenery they do it all. They also do some retail spaces, bars, pop up shops, as well as providing CNC router services to select clients. For a while now they have approached large sculptural pieces a few ways. Sometimes they simply have another company cut it with their 5-axis machine. Other times they have them provide 4” slabs of foam which they cut with their 3-axis machine layer by layer, to be glued up and further carved by hand. It was time for them to do these pieces in house start to finish, which meant buying a hot wire machine, as well as a 5-axis router, and ultimately some new software to go with. This is when they turned to Autodesk and NexGenSolutions.

Project goals

They are trying to carve large-scale sculptures from 2lb eps foam. The company they used to send these parts to uses Autodesk PowerMill, so they decided to try look into this as a potential for their own advanced CAM solution.

Solution

By using Autodesk PowerMill, they are now able to cut the detailed sculptures with a high degree of control, as well as miscellaneous wood parts that require a 5-axis approach. NexGenSolutions helped them do this by providing one-on-one guidance through the Autodesk PowerMill implementation and training process.

Business outcome

Autodesk PowerMill does everything Daedalus Design and Production hoped it could and provides support for trying new techniques given the form’s needs. NexGenSolutions will continue to help Daedalus Design and Production iterate and build out their skills to be even more successful!

Conclusion

Autodesk Powermill is a very powerful software that gives the users complete control over the method they have in mind for completing a project. This is exactly what Daedalus Design and Production needed and will be using Autodesk PowerMill for years to come!

Rapidly Increase R&D and Production

In business since 1994, Aimpro Tactical grew up with traditional CAD/CAM processes and machining techniques. In 2018, the team developed a new product, now covered by 2 US Patents, from which they built a prototype and completed small batches on a Prototrac DPM. Using a separate third party vendor to draw/model in Solidworks and then another to CAM out code in Mastercam or other CAM software, the company moved at what now seems like glacial speed. The challenge was to grow the product line from one specific application and dramatically increase the number of product lines and the number of units produced. This continues to grow and the team is expanding their machining and production capabilities each month. During this time, they are maintaining high-end quality and tight tolerances while minimizing scrap parts and set up times. The company's end user customers expect and demand the highest quality and Aimpro Tactical is committed to delivering only that.

Bringing Capabilities In House To Streamline Processes

Elliott Guitars is a small boutique guitar shop that has been in business for over 16 years. We cater to musicians who expect more from the quality their guitars than the average player. As builders and musicians ourselves, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our designs and components to build the very best instruments possible. Several years ago, this process led us to the purchase of our CNC machine. In our search for better CNC design software, we were impressed by the products offered by NexGenCAM.
