Seiler Partners With Crawford, Murphy & Tilly to Deliver Better Data Exchange Workflows, Using the Survey Database in Civil 3D

Customer challenge

Crawford Murphy & Tilly, Inc is an E & C firm with multiple offices spread across the Midwest & Southeast U.S. CMT has four separate and unique business units, each relying upon a Surveying Dept. providing accurate and essential field data to several project teams. After transitioning to Civil 3D, CMT retained 3rd-party software linked to their survey data to avoid field op's changes potentially disruptive to project teams. CMT wanted to lower software costs, while preserving data workflows.

Project goals

Since CMT uses standardized collection techniques and libraries with data going into Microstation & Civil 3D (for different business units), they wanted to eliminate the requirement of needing the 3rd party software. In consultation with Seiler Instrument, CMT perceived the value of utilizing the C3D Survey Database. Its use would ensure C3D would operate as a standalone product without the need for continued IT support, and ensure smooth program operability by removing nonessential add-ons.

Solution

Working closely with CMT, Seiler modified their existing C3D survey templates, creating figure prefix databases, linework code sets, and surface queries, to ensure their “field to finish” workflow was not disrupted . The benefit of displaying database information in multiple drawings with the survey data being read only, provided the security and protection CMT has always strived to reach. This was followed with custom training reviewing all modifications made with users throughout the company.

Business outcome

Under the guidance of Seiler, CMT was able to make a successful transition to the Civil 3D Survey Database. CMT was provided cost savings, improved efficiencies, and productivity gains with little impact to field operations and current field to finish workflows. The added benefits of data protection and sharing within the functionality of the database made achieving the project goal worthwhile.

Conclusion

CMT continues to turn to Seiler for survey equipment (hardware), IT support (software and licensing) and to improve efficiencies through our internal workflows. "We were able to pursue improvements to productivity that challenge the way we work. Seiler and CMT will continue to partner and seek solutions that are applicable and more importantly feasible into our corporate cultures and workflows." - CMT
