Customer challenge

Structcore's main challenge was to have a work-sharing environment created to manage a project location in Tracy, California with a design team working from India. Daily coordination was required between the operation and design teams to reduce the time required for data management and assure the quality. Following were the key requirements while creating project models: 1) Tracking the daily progress of work and changes done by all team members 2) Tracking the work completed and challenges faced by different teams (across departments) 3) Design reviews and comments from all team members 4) Managing RFIs between the Office and Site teams 5) Identify and manage the clashes between various disciplines including architecture, structure, and MEP 6) Visualization with the latest 3D views for execution

Project goals

The most critical goal was to have better coordination and communication leading to increased productivity. Detailed 3D models produced needed to have more accuracy and efficiency. Finally, timely delivery of the project was also of prime importance.

Solution

The Team used Autodesk BIM 360 as a centralized platform to access the project data and information in real-time. The Document Management tool was used for sharing CAD layouts and Revit Models for all users across various teams. Track of the daily progress was achieved by publishing the model every day. List of changed items was managed by using the compare tool between the published versions of the model. “Design collaboration” was used for identifying the clashes between the Architecture and Structural members. The “Issues” function in Design collaboration was used to deal with design and field issues, which can be assigned to a specific team member.

Business outcome

The major business outcomes was the project was delivered within the stipulated period and this was possible because of increased productivity of all concerned teams – both inter- and intra-departmentally. There was reduced repetitions and revisions of work. This has led to better coordination and communication and an improved technical output. This workflow will definitely be helpful in the upcoming projects for Structcore.
