Symetri Leverages Accelerator Material for McLaren Resulting in Productivity Boost on Conceptual Design and Improved Cross Department Communications

Symetri Leverages Accelerator Material for McLaren Resulting in Productivity Boost on Conceptual Design and Improved Cross Department Communications

Customer challenge

Using the Alias Subdivision (Sub-D) Modeling Accelerator’s discovery session and engagement approach, Symetri was able to uncover that McLaren had critical challenges they needed to address: • As a result of the Pandemic, McLaren needed to figure out how to do more with their Alias Software with less people in the studio. • They wanted to become more productive leveraging the tools and processes already established in the studio. • Raise core competencies of the team and boost awareness of Alias full set of capabilities – including Subdivisional modeling • Better appreciation of the various modeling paradigms – how they work, what they do, and where they could fit into McLaren’s workflow • Increase prototyping output • Reduce time in the design phase

Project goals

Symetri explored the applicability of delivering the Alias Sub-D Accelerator – giving their studio and design teams easier, faster and more effective workflows for developing prototypes. Symetri started by leveraging the Discovery approach from the Consulting Implementation Framework to uncover opportunities for improvement. They then leveraged the Accelerator materials to document shared goals, check progress against those goals and adjust as needed to keep expectations on track. They also leveraged materials available in the Alias Sub-D Accelerator to build the content for their engagement. Both McLaren and Symetri agree that the Accelerator was key to rationalize and prioritize what they wanted to accomplish.

Solution

McLaren was already a long-established power user of Alias, so Symetri aimed to build on the collective knowledge of the team. After initial discovery sessions, Symetri proposed several training sessions to increase awareness of the Alias capabilities across the design studio. This included designers who were infrequent users but needed to have a foundational understanding. They also scheduled training sessions tailored for the more experienced Alias users and with those who had more polygon/Sub-D experience with Maya and 3ds Max. Using a combination of traditional NURBS modelling alongside Alias Sub-D workflows, a new enhanced hybrid design pipeline has been developed, validated and deployed which enables accelerated design, iteration, and communication of concepts, reviewed quickly using VRED, providing McLaren with a process that better addresses the contemporary demands of the studio.

Business outcome

The following business outcomes have been realized: 1) Maximized output from the advanced design phase. 2) Using Sub-D, McLaren are now able to generate an additional 20%+ output during advanced/theme selection stages. 3) Improved collaboration and iteration between McLaren’s teams. 4) Using Sub-D, in concept phases, communication and revision time has now been reduced to minutes or hours rather than days.

Conclusion

The pandemic and the restrictions that the pandemic created really put into perspective how difficult it was to try to organize projects. The framework from the Alias Sub-D Accelerator is what Symetri will be using from now on with all companies. The Accelerator and Accreditation provides Symetri with the confidence to use the framework from the Accelerator and to be able to look at a customer and show them what they have used with McLaren and the benefits that they gained. McLaren feels they are supported by two Partners – Symetri & McLaren. Symetri and McLaren understand that the new process will take time to fully adopt because people are so comfortable in the current workflow, but now there is an appreciation of what can be done since huge amounts of money and time will be saved. Increased productivity and design iteration as Designer and Alias users are able to extensively update models in real-time and simultaneously validate against engineering criteria.

Symetri Assists JLR to Convert 8 Clay Modellers into Competent Members of the Digital Modelling Team

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) needed to address the imbalance of skill sets within their modelling department without losing the investment in and the experience of the core team. The programme cycle and growth chart indicated that they had the right number of heads to sustain the projected workload but in the wrong disciplines. As the studio is becoming increasingly digital, the resource numbers needed to increase in the CAS team.

Working Together to Expand Innovation and Realise Future Vision

Marshall Survey Associates (MSA) are 3D scan and measurement consultants, where accuracy and creativity are critical for customer satisfaction. MSA services cover measured build surveys of light surveys, area reports, topographic surveys, utility surveys, monitoring and visualisation/3D modelling. The challenge for MSA was to equip their team with the best tools and resources to drive the best outcomes for all stakeholders.
