Success Story

Transportation Design Support for GAC USA using Autodesk Alias and Autodesk VRED

Transportation Design Support for GAC USA using Autodesk Alias and Autodesk VRED

Customer challenge

Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (“GAC”) was incorporated in June 1997. In 2021, GAC’s production and sales both  exceeded 2 million, with a positive year-on-year growth. Based on export planning, GAC Group successfully pushed ahead its international business, and GAC MOTOR was born with the right time.

As of today, GAC MOTOR has set up the oversea distribution in 26 countries in five major regions. In order to further optimize the development path, the international strategic plan has been clarified.

GAC USA was needing to ramp-up its Autodesk software and services tools quickly, as they were hiring additional design staff to launch a new car design project.

Project goals

Primary goal: GAC USA needed to ramp up the design team’s tools within a 30-day period, utilizing the Autodesk software tools combined with Linkage services for on-site design resources, training and ad hoc technical support.

Through a number of meetings with the GAC USA management team, we tailored an Autodesk based solution to fit their needs for a digital design pipeline, as the use of traditional design procedures, like clay & foam milling a full and 1/4 scale exterior model, weren't possible.

Solution

The Autodesk ID&V tools, specifically Autodesk Alias (legacy digital 3D modeling tools and SUBDs) and Autodesk VRED for digital visualization, were the right choices for GAC USA to 'go fast' to get a number of design iterations out for review and refinement.

We provided Autodesk Alias and Autodesk VRED support for the GAC Team and some ad hoc Autodesk Fusion 360 training from Autodesk technical experts.

We also provided a complete set of Autodesk Alias and Autodesk VRED software solutions for GAC, per their needs and timing.

Business outcome

GAC USA was able to staff up their design quickly to meet the design project timing by utilizing an Autodesk based solution combined with the Linkage first class services and technical support.

GAC senior management saw the value of GAC USA's design studio and are continuing to use it to advanced the design of GAC Motors.

Conclusion

It was because of our early investment with GAC USA where we provided a complete solution that has now created a strong relationship with them where we continue to provide them with Autodesk software subscriptions, training and services.

We look forward to seeing them grow.

Linkage Supports Waymo's Autonomous Car Ongoing Design

All Google divisions were new to using Autodesk Alias and VRED when we first started working with them in 2014 so Linkage worked with all the users to present the merits and values of using these tools in pre-sales meetings, working with the Autodesk Named Account Rep and his team. Specifically, the Waymo division needed to be up-and-running ASAP. Linkage provided a complete package of software, training and services to fast-track their use of these tools.

Fast Design Launch for Nikola Motors

Nikola Motors was in a truly unique situation as they had only two people on staff when they launched in 2015: their founder, Trevor Milton and a designer, Steve Jennes. I supported Steve 15 years ago when he worked at Isuzu Motors so he knew to call me to ask for our help. Steve had to design and digitally build the initial electric semi-truck concept in less than 30 days. He was very nervous about taking on these responsibilities as his Alias 3D modeling skills were rusty.

Linkage Provides Complete Design Solution for Rivian Automotive

Linkage has been working with Rivian Automotive for the past four (4) years by providing product design and transportation software and services that include Autodesk's Alias and VRED solutions for 3D digital content creation and digital visualization. Initially, Rivian was a startup so they were challenged by not having enough available funds to purchase the Autodesk subscriptions they needed to get their work done.
