Issue:

Users reported that when doing any of the following in AutoCAD Products:

  • Opening the model tab.
  • Switching between the model tab and layout tabs.
  • Switching between the layout tabs and the model tab.
  • Creating a new layout tab.

The program hangs for a long time or freezes and does not recover.

Solution:

Do one or more of the following:

  • Install the latest updates for AutoCAD (see Install Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements).
  • Update the graphics driver (see How to update your system to the latest certified video driver).
  • Ensure all search paths (under OPTIONS > Files tab) exist and are reachable.
  • Make sure AutoCAD and the user have permission to access external reference (XREF) file locations.
  • Move external reference files to the local drive and update the paths.
  • On the command line in AutoCAD, type LAYOUTREGENCTL and set the value to 2.
Note: this command is available in AutoCAD LT starting from version 2018. In previous versions, it set to 2 and cannot be changed.
  • Repair the drawing file (see How to repair corrupt AutoCAD files).
  • Disable add-ons or plug-ins to test if they are interfering with how AutoCAD functions.
  • Disable Sleep mode in the Windows Power & Sleep settings, if the issue mainly occurs after the computer wakes up from sleep or being locked.
  • If the file is stored in a non-Microsoft network environment, move the file to the local drive, then work on it from there (see Autodesk support for non-Microsoft network).
  • Set the DISPSILH variable in the drawing to 0. Change the variable both within individual layout viewports, and on the Model tab.
  • Set the TREEDEPTH variable in the drawing to 3020.
  • For AutoCAD 2019 and earlier, in the AutoCAD command line, type WHIPTHREAD and set the value to 3.
  • Reset AutoCAD to defaults (see How to reset AutoCAD to defaults ).
  • Verify the computer meets the Recommended system requirements, particularly with versions that use AEC objects such as MEP and Architecture (see System requirements for AutoCAD and Toolsets).
  • Copy the content of the drawing inti a new one , see Optimizing the AutoCAD drawing file: Windows/Mac Clipboard Copy and Paste
