Issue:

Users reported that when working in Revit (saving, opening, synchronizing files, reloading links), the following message appears:

Revit

Encountered a sharing violation while accessing [path]\[file name].[extension]

Image: "Encountered a sharing violation while accessing..." message

Also:

  • The error may be intermittent.
  • The Revit journal file will show lines similar to the following at the time of the error:
…Save exception "<unknown>", code=<unknown>: Encountered a sharing violation while accessing C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp\[path]\[filename].[extension]
…TaskDialog "Encountered a sharing violation while accessing C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp\[path]\[filename].[extension]

Causes:

Revit is being blocked from accessing the file referenced in the journal.

This could occur due to:

  • Windows file/folder permissions.
  • Security software scans/blocks the file, preventing Revit from accessing it.

Solution:

Check that your user account has Full Control for the folders referenced in the journal. If not sure how to do this, work with your IT/Computer support.
