Issue:

When programming Turning toolpaths (Profile Roughing, Profile Finishing, Groove, etc.) in Fusion 360, Inventor CAM, or HSMWorks, the following notification is displayed and the toolpath does not generate:

Error: Internal CAM kernel error. Please report through your support channel.

CAM kernel Error

Causes:

The possible causes of this issue include:
  • The settings of the radial limits not allowing any model area between to machine between them.
  • Particular features that interrupt the spun profile.
  • Sketch contours are being used to drive the toolpath.

Solution:

Go through the following solutions to generate the turning operation:

  • Revise and change the settings for the radial limits.
Note: This often requires changing the outer radii reference from a model OD reference to a stock OD reference.
  • Change the front limit to Stock Front.
  • Suppress any features that interrupt the turned profile such as cross cut holes or milled steps. Then, perform the following:
  1. Regenerate the toolpath.
  2. When the toolpath is generated as it should be, right click on the toolpath and select Protect to keep the toolpath from changing.
  3. Go back to the model and unsuppress the suppressed features.
  • Change the toolpath to Allowing Grooving should help generate the toolpath if it would require grooving based on the cutting direction.
  • If sketch contours are being used to drive the toolpath, make a 3D model from the sketch and use the physical body in the setup and toolpath, rather than a sketch contour.
  • Enable Spun Profile in the setup.
  • Adjust the Finish Allowance.
  • Use a different tool type.
  • Disable rest machining.
