Issue:

Users reported that after launching an Autodesk 2020 software product, a message similar to the following is displayed:

License Error

The License manager is not functioning or is improperly installed.
<Program> will shut down now.

Note: The error may appear in versions 2019 or earlier as well. In such cases, refer to the specific article: "The License manager is not functioning or is improperly installed" when launching AutoCAD versions 2017 to 2019.

Environment:

  • Windows 10.
  • Windows 11.

Update the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service and the Autodesk Identity Component

  1. Download and install the latest update for:

Uninstall and Reinstall the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service

  1. Uninstall Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service 

  2. Download and install the latest Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service


Restart or check if the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service is running

Verify that the Autodesk products are using the correct license type

Check on the Autodesk Account or with your Admin whether the correct license type is in use.
If the license type needs to be changed follow the steps in How to change or reset a license for Autodesk software.

 

Verify that the Autodesk products are registered with the Licensing Service

  2. If the product that's affected is not listed, re-register an Autodesk software with the Autodesk Licensing Service.


Troubleshoot antivirus software and folder permissions

Add the Autodesk product folders to your Antivirus exclusion list and make sure the user running the software has Full Control of the Autodesk folders.

Verify your computer date/time settings

Verify conflicting applications

Verify that your machine is not running any Autodesk Licensing Service: Known Conflicting Applications.


Adjust properties for the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service

  1. Type "Services.msc" into the Windows search. 

  2. Navigate to the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service.

  3. Right-click it and select "Properties".

  4. Select the "Log On" tab.

  5. Change "Log on as:" to "Local System account" and select "Allow service to interact with desktop".

  6. Select the "Apply" button.

  7. Restart the service. 

  8. Restart the software. 


Clean uninstall and reinstall

  2. Reinstall the software.
