GEOGRAPHICLOCATION live maps don't display within AutoCAD products

Issue:

Users reported that when attempting to use the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION command to insert live maps in AutoCAD 2021 products or newer, the maps do not display.
  • The position can be chosen, the coordinate system can be selected, and the marker can be placed in the drawing, but then the screen remains blank/black, showing the program background.
  • The same process in an older version of AutoCAD products on the same computer may work as expected. 
  • The Bing Maps logo may not be displayed in the drawing area.
  • The Geolocation tab may not be displayed on the Ribbon.
  • The country for the chosen coordinate system is covered by the Bing service.
  • In some instances, attempts to use the GEOMAPIMAGE command can cause the program to exit and generate an error report, which can be sent to Autodesk's internal teams for analysis.

Causes:

  • Proxy server, Antivirus, VPN, firewall, or Security software is blocking the map reading.
  • The network environment attempting to access the live maps utilizes an SSL decryption process.
    • Note: Since the 2021 release of AutoCAD and corresponding verticals, there were security improvements to avoid "man in the middle" attacks a proxy server could facilitate through an SSL decryption process.

Solution:

Proxy server, Antivirus, VPN, firewall, or Security software is blocking the map reading

  • If applicable, disconnect from the VPN and validates product works as intended. Configure VPN to work with required URLs and the site: dev.virtualearth.net
  • If a full bypass is not possible, test configuring the proxy to skip decryption of 
    • *.virtualearth.net
    • misc.autocad.com 
    • developer.api.autodesk.com
    • *arcgis.com

The network environment attempting to access the live maps utilizes an SSL decryption process

  • Contact your SSL/firewall vendor to confirm that the certificate generated by the proxy/firewall for TLS decryption has CRL distribution endpoint.
  • If possible, bypass any SSL decryption processes in place.
