Issue:

What tests can you perform to check basic connectivity between a Vault Client and Vault Server?

Connecting to Vault using localhost server is not working.

Environment:

Network

Solution:

Am I using the correct COMPUTERNAME (%SERVERNAME%) for the Vault Server?

If you are using wrong name for the Vault Server, the Vault client will not be able to login. Check the %SERVERNAME% with the Vault administrator.

If the correct %SERVERNAME% fails to log in, can I use the IP address instead?

If you can log in using the IP Address, but not the %SERVERNAME%, it indicates an issue with your network configuration. Our recommendation is that you use the IP address until your network administrator addresses the issue.

Can my Vault client machine PING the remote machine?

If you cannot PING the Vault Server using either the IP Address or the %SERVERNAME%. The Vault client will not be able to login. Contact your network administrator for assistance.

Can I use a web browser to connect to the Vault Server?

On the Vault Client, start a web browser and in the address bar, type the following

If an error is displayed, use a web search engine to discover how others have fixed the problem with Microsofts Internet Information Services (IIS) .
If everything is working correctly, the IIS home page should be shown. (the image varies from one version of IIS to another)

Are the client and server in the same domain?

If the client and server are in different domains, or even if the client is not added to the domain, it can result in no connectivity. Avoid this by ensuring they are both in the same Windows Domain. If they are in attached to different domains, ensure a trust relationship exists between the two domains.

TIP!
One way to check if the Vault Server is accepting web traffic is to check the IIS log files (default location is C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC1). If the Clients IP address is not appearing in the IIS logs, something between the Client and Server is preventing communication. The IIS Logs will also record any error codes which can be helpful.

Once you have verified that the Vault Server is accepting remote web traffic connections, you have completed the basic Vault connectivity checks.

If you are still not able to connect to the Vault Server, work with your network administrator to resolve any network configuration issues.

More advanced troubleshooting includes using tools like Fiddler, TCPView, and Windows built-in command line tools such as netstat, tracert.
