How do I check that I have the latest video drivers installed?

Issue:

How to check if the latest the latest video, graphic or display drivers are installed for your graphics card.

Solution:

Check the following:

At the Windows Start, type "dxdiag" then click run. (Or navigate to and double click on C:\Windows\System32\dxdiag.exe)

If prompted to check for WHQL digitial signatures, click "No"
The "DirectX Diagnostics Tool" is opened.
Click "Next Page".

On the "Display 1" tab, note the "Name" of the graphics card, the "Manufacturer", "Chip Type" and "Version" and the "Date".

(Some or all of these will help you determine if you have the latest drivers installed.)

How to uddate graphic card driver

Go to the Driver download site of the cards manufacturer.

Using the information that you noted from the DirectX Diagnostics Tool, search the manufacturers website to see if there is a newer driver than the one that you have installed

Some graphic card manufacturers will use a different version numbering scheme than the computer manufacturer. This can be confusing.

The DXDIAG, numbering format has a number format for the version number as ##.##.##.#### (24.21.13.9764)
The NVIDIA driver numbering format has a differnet number format for the version number ###.## (391.74)
At time of writing, and both formats could change at any time, the last 5 digits of each number correspond to each other.
3.9764 from the DXDIAG number, tell me that is a newer version than that available from NVIDIA 391.74
39764 is higher than 39174.

WARNING!

Installing the 391.74 driver from NVIDIA, resulted in a message being displayed that it was installing an older driver. After clicking through that message, the following DXDIAG, status was displayed.

The graphic above shows that the NVIDIA websites, latest graphic driver is OLDER than the one it replaced.

If there is a newer version than the one you have installed, download and install it. Otherrwise, reinstall the same latest driver.

ALSO BE AWARE.....

Windows updates can break graphic card drivers and prevent them from working correctly.
Reinstalling \ repairing the same, latest graphic card driver after a Windows update can fix some issues.
