Issue:

How to fix 4K Viewport UI issues with 3ds Max, Maya, Motion Builder or Mudbox in Windows 10. Improve consistency and performance with monitors of different resolutions.

Symptoms include, but not limited to the following:
  • Text is too small and unreadable. 
  • UI elements are disproportionate. 
  • Menu items overlap and cannot be clicked.

Solution:

If display issues occur in the Viewport or UI using 3ds Max, Maya, Motion Builder or Mudbox, especially when running on 4K monitors (or multiple monitors), try the following Windows 10 troubleshooting steps:

Restart Windows.

Check that the issue is resolved by restarting the system.
 

Change Blurry apps in Windows

  1. In the Windows 10 Search Bar, type the following: Fix apps that are blurry.
  2. The Settings > Advanced Scaling Settings menu should appear.
  3. Make sure the "Let Windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry" setting is turned Off. Under Custom Scaling, this should be blank as well. Click Apply if necessary, then close the menu.

  1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the default program folder. Each default location is provided below:
3ds Max
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 201x

Maya
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya201x\bin

Motion Builder
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\MotionBuilder 201x\bin\x64

Mudbox
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Mudbox 201x
  1. Right-click the [program name].exe file to bring up the Windows Context menu.
  2. Click on the "Run with Graphics Processor" entry and ensure the machine is running with a high-speed NVIDIA or AMD video card by default, instead of a lower-power onboard GPU (such as an Intel chip). If not, change to the higher-speed GPU to use it by default.Windows Context Menu
  3. Right-click the EXE file again to bring up the Context menu.
  4. At the bottom of the menu, select Properties.

  1. Click on the Compatibility tab and make sure that all Compatibility entries are unchecked.

  1. Click the Change high DPI settings button.
  2. Ensure the 3dsmax.exe Properties window entries are unchecked as well.

  1. Click OK to close each window.
  2.  If necessary, restart Windows and relaunch 3ds Max, Maya, Motion Builder or Mudbox to see if these settings help fix previous program UI and icon issues.

Change the DPI settings

  1. Navigate to the motionbuilder.exe file on your C: drive
  2. Right click on it and select "Properties"
  3. In the compatibility tab, click the "Change High DPI settings" button.
  4. In the new window that opens, click the check box next to Override High DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: (From the drop-down menu, select) "System"
  5. Click ok to apply.
