Issue:

How to identify the type of worksharing in use with a Revit model

Causes:

There are three types of worksharing workflows available within Revit, and it is important to know which is in use, as troubleshooting and help documentation may vary for each:
  • File-based worksharing: Central model is stored within file server on the LAN and users within the office create local models that synchronize to the central.

  • Cloud based worksharing : Revit cloud models are stored our cloud environment (BIM 360 or Autodesk Docs). Note: To work with cloud based workshared models a BIM Collaborate Pro license is required.

  • Revit Server Enterprise: Central model is stored within an application file server on the LAN. Revit Server extends worksharing to multiple offices, where an optional accelerator server is setup in each office to maintain performance (while the host server stores the model data).

Solution:

File-based worksharing

For this type of worksharing there is a central model, and local models. The central model is stored on a server within the office, and is accessed via a network drive, UNC path, or IP address.

Cloud based worksharing

For this type of worksharing the central model is stored in a cloud project (BIM 360 Document Management / Autodesk Docs), and the model is accessed through the Revit Home page (Autodesk Docs or through Recent Files).

Revit Server Enterprise

For this type of worksharing the central model is stored on an IIS based application server which is located within the company network (either in the local office or remote). The model is accessed through the open dialog, using the Revit Server option on the left (Places).

Non-Workshared

If none of the options above match your file type/workflow, you may have non-workshared files. In this file type, there is no central/local models, instead just a standalone RVT, which is saved locally. As the model is saved you should see backups with a number appended for example filename.001.rvt (this does not show up for any of the workshared workflows).
