Issue:

How to import STEP (.STP) file directly into a Revit project or family?

Solution:

Revit 2025 and later versions

In addition to importing STEP files, the 2025 version adds Export and Linking: Import/Export STEP files (What's New in 2025)

Revit 2024.2

With the 2024.2 update, Revit supports Importing STEP files: Importing CAD Files

Revit 2023 and earlier versions:

These versions do not support direct import of STEP files.
 
To get the file into Revit, use one of the following options:
  • Use alternate format out of the host software to then be used in Revit (DWG/SAT).
  • Link using AutoCAD
  1. Import STEP into AutoCAD.
  2. Save the file as a DWG.
  3. Import DWG file into Revit.
  • through Inventor or Fusion 360
  1. Open the STEP File with either Inventor or Fusion 360.
  2. After opening the file with one of the programs above, Export As an SAT file.
  3. Open Revit and click Insert.
  4. In the Insert tab pick between Link CAD or Import CAD and select the SAT file type.
  • through Navisworks Manage or Simulate
  1. Open the file in Navisworks.
  2. Save it as NWD file.
  3. Open Revit and to click the Insert panel.
  4. Select the Coordination Model.
  5. Press Add and search for the NWD/NWC files.
Note: The STP file cannot be edited once loaded into Revit. Make any needed changes to the file prior to linking the file into Revit.
