Issue:

You would like to reset the Revit user interface (i.e. the Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, and Project Browser) back to the default settings and remove any customization that has been applied.

Causes:

There could multiple reasons that you would want to reset the Revit interface, including the following:
  • One or more interface elements are not working as expected (and resetting could restore the correct functionality).
  • You want to revert the interface back to the defaults (without manually adjusting the settings).

Solution:

Reset Utility

  1. Close Revit (if the utility detects that Revit is still running, it will abort).
  2. Download the attached ResetUI Batch utility (ZIP file)
  3. Extract the ZIP file
  4. Run the BAT file (ResetUI) for the Revit version you want to reset (review included Readme.txt for more details).

Manual Reset

  1. Reset the Ribbon and Quick Access toolbar: Rename the UIState.dat file located in the following folder to UIState.old:
%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit {Product Name}\ENU
Note: %APPDATA% is a system variable that directs to the Application Data folder (by default this is located in C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming). To access this folder you can type %APPDATA% into the Address bar of Windows Explorer (Shortcut: Windows Key + E), or into the text field of the Windows Run Dialog (Shortcut: Windows Key + R).
  1. Reset your Project Browser to the default location:

Rename the RevitUILayout.xml file located in the following folder to RevitUILayout.old:

%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit {Product Name
