Issue:

How to transfer Vault Server Autodesk Data Management Server (ADMS) Console backup and restore it to another computer/new server?

For example:
  • Changing the physical Server
  • Moving the Vault server from a virtual system to a physical system
  • Migrating Vault to a newer Version
What format does the backup need to be in to be able to import it? What are the default restore location paths in Backup and Restore Wizard? What should be entered for file store restore location?

Solution:

Try these high-level steps to move the Vault Server to another computer:
  1. Make sure that the new machine meets the system requirements for the Vault Server installation. See System requirements for Autodesk Vault products.
  2. Optional: Install SQL Standard or Enterprise Edition (If no SQL is detected, Step 3 will automatically install SQL Express Edition). See How to Preinstall The AUTODESKVAULT SQL Instance.
  3. Install the Vault server on the new machine and any service pack or hotfixes. See Autodesk Vault Server Quick Start Installation | Vault 2025
  4. On the old server, start the ADMS console and back up the Vault Server.
  5. Move the backup data to the new server.
  6. Restore the backup to the new server. See more: Back Up or Restore a Vault | Vault 2025 and Step 2: Back Up or Restore a Vault | Vault 2025

Backup and Restore Wizard allows to specify:

  • Backup directory to restore:

Restore expects the same content as it was created by Autodesk Data Management Server (ADMS) Console Backup functionality - folder (not a ZIP/7Z file or any other extension) that contains backed-up data. Example of backup folder:

  • Database data location:

SQL databases location can be set to:
  • Default Restore location - this option will use default SQL database location that was specified upon SQL Server installation. Current default location can be visible when starting Backup and Restore Wizard

  • Another selected restore location to host SQL databases.
  • File Store location:

Files Store location can be set to:
  • Original Restore location - this option will try to place File Store on the same location as it used to be on previous/old server
Example:
Filestore was located on C:\Filestore\Vault on old server and restore operation on new server will place it also under C:\Filestore\Vault on new machine.
  • Another selected restore location to host File Store.
  • Other file store options:

Check Step 2: Back Up or Restore a Vault | Vault 2025 for explanation of each of the option
  • Use the existing file store files
  • Validate file store:
    • Standard.
    • Quick.

Note: Environmental configurations like web config changes, SSL configurations, proxy configurations, customizations on the Vault Server, has to be done on the new server manually.

It is possible when moving the Vault to upgrade versions as long as the new server is within the two-year requirement for upgrading Vault.
