Issue:

Is the Job Processor (a component of Autodesk Vault Client) supported on a Server Operating System (OS), such as Windows Server <Year>?

Solution:

See the Vault Online help "Troubleshooting Job Processor" (Can I install the Job Processor on a server operating system?)

Note: Limited support only starts with Vault 2024 and later.
  • The Thick Vault Client can be installed on a Server Operating System. However, prior to the 2023 release, the Thick Vault Client usage on a Server OS should be limited to administrative tasks such as user and group management or connectivity troubleshooting.
  • The reason is that none of the external dependencies that the Job Processor uses to process jobs (Full Inventor, Revit and DWG TrueView), are supported on Server Operating Systems.
  • The Vault System Requirements do not list Server Operating Systems as supported platforms for the Thick Vault Client. Therefore, the Thick Vault Client (and the Job Processor) is officially not supported on a Server Operating System. So, avoid using the Thick Vault Client as a Job Processor on a Server Operating System.

Important Notes

  • Vaults Job Processor cannot be installed without the Vault Client.
  • Server operating systems typically are more secure than desktop operating systems by restricting internet access and other security settings. The restricted internet access will prevent the Vault Client from using Single-User licensing unless specific restrictions are removed.  For more information, see: Which URLs/Protocols need to be allowed for Autodesk Subscription Licensing.
  • Job Processor jobs can use a high percentage of CPU, Memory or Disk IO resources. Performance issues can occur if Jobs are executed on the same machine as the Vault Server.
  • Autodesk does not test the Vault Client or its components on Server Operating Systems. If the Vault Client or its components are installed on a server operating system and an issue arises, Autodesk Support may request a different setup. Specifically, they may ask for the problem to be reproduced on a supported workstation operating system.
  • Autodesk recommends that the Vault Server is installed on a machine or virtual environment with dedicated resources to run correctly.
