Issue:

When opening a particular Revit model, an error message appears about corruption or an unrecoverable error. Revit may crash when opening the model followed by an Autodesk Customer Error Report (CER).

Revit

An unrecoverable error has occurred. The program will now be terminated. All of your data has been recently saved, so there is no need to create recovery files.

Select Help or press F1 for more information on possible causes of unrecoverable errors.
"An unrecoverable error has occurred" error
The Revit journal file includes lines similar to:

Causes:

ESSchema refers to a data structure used by add-ons to attach information to the Revit project.

  • The Missing ESSchema message indicates that while this type of information has been added to the project, the schema (defining how the information should be created/modified/used) is missing.
  • The GUID referenced in journal entries on this error is a unique identifier for the add-on.
  • The GUID listed (b4a4ade1-a646-400d-aded-3cf64d759c01) relates to the 'TraceIt' add-on.

Solution:

Revit 2024.3

See the following article for information (need to Audit model) specific to this version: Journal records "DBG_WARN: Missing ESSchema..." prior to crash when working with Revit 2024.3.

Revit 2021 and later versions:

  1. When the error is presented close Revit.

  2. Open the latest journal file.

  3. Find the Missing ESSchema text.

  4. Copy the GUID listed.

  5. Search all journals for this GUID to see if another file was opened recently that contains the schema:
    ' [Jrn.ESSchemaOpenRoster] 2Rvt.Attr.StoredSchemas: <Schema Name> <Schema GUID>…

Searching journal files in a file explorer window for the GUID

If a file is found where the schema was loaded, use the following steps to restore the schema:

  1. Open the file containing the schema first.
  2. Open the file with the missing schema using Audit.
  3. If the model opens successfully, save and then confirm the fix by closing Revit and reopening the model normally.

If a file cannot be found where the schema was loaded, try using the attached file "This_file_contains_many_known_Schemas" (make sure to save with an RVT extension).

Revit 2020 and earlier versions:

  1. Try opening earlier versions of the model in question, or other related models to see if this allows the original model to open.

  2. If a file is found that allows the original model to open, use the previous steps to open the original model using the Audit checkbox.

If a file cannot be found where the schema was loaded, try using the attached file "This_file_contains_many_known_Schemas" (make sure to save with an RVT extension).
