“An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host...” in journal when using Revit Server

Issue:

  • Possible symptoms of this situation:
    • Fatal error or other crash.
    • Slow performance when opening models or synchronizing.
    • "This operation could not be completed" message occurs:

Operation Could Not Be Completed

This operation could not be completed. Please try again.
If you are collaborating on a model using the cloud or Revit Server, check your network connection.
If the problem persists, save any changes to the models locally.
Operation Could not be complatet message in Revit Server
  • When the issue occurs, the following line is written to the journal before the “This operation could not be completed” message:
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
Note: This message partially varied depending on the language used. For example, the German message:
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: Eine vorhandene Verbindung wurde vom Remotehost geschlossen

Solution:

Revit Server Prerequisites

Check that all Revit Server Prerequisites are installed.

Services

Go through the following steps to check that the following services are active:

  1. Press Windows Key + R on the host server to open the "Run" window.
  2. Type "services.msc" and click ok.

  1. In the Startup Type column, make sure that the following services are set to Automatic:
  • Net.Tcp Listener Adapter
  • Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service
  1. If one of the services is set to Manual, change it to Automatic in the service Properties.

More Troubleshooting

If the preceding steps don't resolve the issue, there may be an issue with the connection between the end-user PCs and the host server. Use Telnet to check the connection as suggested in this article: "This operation could not be completed. Please try again..." when browsing or syncing to central on Revit Server.
