Issue:

When opening a specific Revit model, one of the following errors is received:

Revit - Cannot Open model

The model <Filename>.rvt is missing many elements, and it cannot be opened.

The model is missing many elements, and it cannot be opened

Causes:

This message indicates that there are more missing elements than Revit will ignore. With just a few missing elements, Revit can ignore them and attempt to continue opening the model.

Solution:

Audit or Upgrade

If the model opens without error normally, but gives the missing elements error when Auditing or upgrading to a newer version, see the following article for troubleshooting this behavior:  File will not synchronize in Revit

Error without Audit

If the error occurs when opening the model without upgrading or using Audit, see the following info for clearing the error and preventing future errors:

The following help topic has more information on dealing with this error: Missing Elements.
