Issue:

What are the best practices for .RVT model performance within the Revit software?

Causes:

There are many causes for file performance and slowness in overall navigation. To best overcome this and other potential performance related issues, a good maintenance plan is suggested.

Solution:

Performance

The help topic Improve Revit Performance contains many topics with information on improving performance such as:

Some additional items to consider:

  • Reduce Complexity or Adjust Visibility: Either reduce the complexity of the extensively detailed elements or make sure their visibility is limited to "fine" detail views only.
  • Delete Unnecessary Model Views : Remove any model views that are no longer needed to reduce the file size.
  • Create Multiple Types within Families: Instead of placing multiple independent generic models in the Revit project, consider creating multiple types within the family.
  • Review and Remove Plan Regions: Check for plan regions, as they can cause performance issues. Delete unnecessary plan regions or remove the sketch geometry, especially if they appear in review warnings.

Model Checker

The Interoperability Tools Model Checker includes Best Practices checks for different versions of Revit, that can help in comparing metrics of different models (File Size, Warnings, Loadable Families, Purgeable Elements, Model Groups, Imported CAD files, Rooms, Views, and more).

Model Maintenance

Many maintenance items such as purging unused elements, resolving warnings, and compacting are discussed in the performance topics/links above, but here are items that may not have been previously mentioned:
