Issue:

When you try to use a Hewlett-Packard (HP) printer with Revit on Windows 8 or newer operating system, the printer cannot be selected and reverts to "None" or the print process fails.

Causes:

The HP printers that fail to work may be, but are not exclusively, older models that HP does not support on Windows 8 or later systems, such as the Designjet 800 and 1050c plotters. See:

Solution:

Try the following solutions and/or workarounds:

Confirm issue is specific to Revit

Try printing to the DesignJet from other applications, to see if the same behavior occurs.

If the same behavior occurs from multiple applications (from different manufacterers), this would indicate there is a problem with the printer or the printer driver. Contact HP for assistance in troubleshooting the printer (if the printer is currently supported by HP).

Check for newer printer drivers that support Windows 8 and higher:

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP printer driver using the latest driver from HP's website (HP Drivers & Downloads).

Alternatively, try using the HP Universal Print Driver with your printer. See:
To uninstall your HP driver:
  1. Uninstall any listing for the printer in "Apps and Features".
  2. Delete it from "Printers & Scanners".
Note: This process may not remove all the necessary driver files in order to let you have a clean reinstall. You may need to manually remove the HP driver files (see How to manually uninstall a printer driver in Windows).

Alternative solution

If reinstalling the printer does not resolve the problem, try either of the following:
  • Plot to PDF from Revit and then print the PDF from Adobe Reader to your HP printer.
  • Delete current page setups and create new setup for specific size desired.
