Issue:

Switching to a layout tab for the first time in a drawing session takes longer than subsequent switches to the same layout, which are instantaneous or very fast.

Causes:

This behavior is expected.

Note: If the LAYOUTREGENCTL system variable is on 1 or 2, the first time a layout is selected in a drawing session, caching and regeneration will cause the switch to take longer.

Solution:

It may still be possible to speed up the initial regeneration and caching of the layout tabs and make the first switch faster. Try the following:
  • Check the External References in a drawing by unloading them one at a time. Having a large Xref copied multiple times with a clipping mask can slow down regeneration.
  • Check the drawing and attached Xrefs for corruption. See: How to repair corrupt AutoCAD files.
