Issue:

Is it possible or supported to upgrade or migrate the operating system with an installed Vault Server installation?
  • For example, Vault Server installed on Windows Server 2019 is upgraded to Windows Server 2022.
  • Alternatively, an upgrade to an unsupported operating system may have occurred; for example, upgrading an environment hosting Vault Server 2023 to Windows Server 2025.

Solution:

Supported operating system environments

  • It is supported to upgrade the operating system as long as the Vault Server version meets the system requirements of target operating system.
  • Installing to an unsupported operating system may result in loss of application functionality and downtime; if this happens, restore a Vault backup to a supported operating system environment.

Operating system upgrade best practice

Best practice is to install to a new Windows Server environment and restore from a Vault backup:
  1. Create a backup on your existing Vault environment Vault Help | Step 1: Start the Back Up and Restore wizard | Autodesk
  2. Create/Setup a new (higher) Windows Server.
  3. Install Vault Server: Vault Help | Vault Server Installation | Autodesk on the new Windows Server.
  4. Restore the Backup created in step #1: Vault Help | Step 2: Back Up or Restore a Vault | Autodesk

Products:

Vault Basic; Vault Professional; Vault Workgroup;
