Issue:

How to utilize a template project for AutoCAD Plant 3D for company specific blocks, class definitions and various standards.

Alternatively, how to use the settings of an existing project for creating a new project?

Causes:

AutoCAD Plant 3D projects are self contained and do not reference a main project, therefore a template is useful to standardize newly created projects.

Solution:

Creating a template project:

  1. Create a new project like normal, only place this new project in a specific and secure location - in some cases it's good to lock access so that the main project does not get modified.
    • Generally, it's a good idea to place this where company specific content, templates or blocks are located. So for example: X:\CAD Standards\Plant 3D\Template.
  2. Modify the project settings, templates, blocks and classes based on company standards.

Using the template project:

  1. Create a new project, at the first screen select the option at the bottom for "Copy settings from existing project".
Project Setup Wizard (Page 1 of 6) > Copy Settings from existing project
  1. Use the button on the right to navigate to the template project and select the project.xml of that project.
  2. Finish the setup wizard.
