Issue:

When launching Maya or Maya LT 2017 or 2018, the View Cube is not showing in the Viewport or workspace. Is the View Cube compatible with Maya Viewport 2.0?

Causes:

The View Cube is not compatible with Viewport 2.0 (default Viewport setting in Maya 2017 and later). The View Cube is only compatible with the Legacy Viewport.

Solution:

To gain access to the View Cube in Maya or Maya LT 2017 and on, reactivate the Legacy Viewport and change the rendering UI by following these steps:
  1. Renable the Legacy Viewport by following this guide: How to restore the Legacy Viewport in Maya
  2. Change the Rendering Engine to OpenGL - Core Profile (Compatibility):
rendering engine path
Window > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Display > Rendering Display Dropdown Menu > OpenGL - Core Profile (Compatibility)
  1. To save and apply this change, restart Maya
  2. Re-launch Maya. Change the Viewport Renderer to Legacy Renderer in the viewport:
legacy viewport
Renderer > Legacy Default Viewport

The Viewcube will automatically turn on in the corner of the viewport after selecting Legacy Default Viewport
