Issue:

When setting up the replication of a Vault filestore from one site to another. What is the best way to transfer large numbers of files from one site to another?

Solution:

The following methods can be adopted to transfer large Vault filestore from one site to another:

Method 1

  1. Install a filestore server on a remote site connected over the network and enable the replication of the filestore.
  2. The file replication can be configured to occur manually or automatically.
  3. The entire contents of the filestore will then be copied over the network. The advantage of this method is that it is the easiest option for an administrator. The disadvantage is that, depending on the size of the filestore, it could generate numerous network traffic impacting other software that uses the same network.
  4. Once started it is not easy to stop and could result in a negative experience for the entire organization.

Method 2

  1. Install a filestore server on a remote site connected over the network and enable the replication of the filestore.
  2. If you choose to replicate at this point the entire filestore will be replicated. This may not be desirable.
  3. Maybe a subset of files would be preferable in this initial replication.
  4. So, before either scheduling or manually triggering file replication, right click the Vault and select "Replicate Folders". Right click the Vaults root folder and select "Uncheck All".
  5. Then reselect a subset of folders. Click OK. Then right click the filestore again and select "Replicate Now".

Method 3

  1. Install a filestore server on a remote site connected over the network.
  2. Before enabling the Vault, copy the filestore and excluding FileStoreInfo.fsg from the ADMS server to a USB disk.
  3. Transport it using a courier or other method to the remote site.
  4. Once the filestore arrives, copy it to the File Servers disk, enable the Vault using the filestore location of the newly copied files. Once enabled, the file server will validate all the files in the filestore.
  5. Most likely, there will be files added to the ADMS site after its filestore was copied to the disk.
  6. During the files servers filestore validation, it checks each file to see if it presents. If it is not present, it will try to replicate from another site.
