Issue:

What is the recommended workflow for linking IFC files in a Revit Cloud model?

Solution:

Support  for linking IFC files using the Desktop Connector was introduced in Revit 2019.2.

To use the Autodesk Desktop Connector for linking IFC files:

  1. Upload the IFC file to BIM 360 Docs.
  2. Open the Revit project.
  3. Link IFC > This Computer > BIM 360 > Browse to IFC file. 
  4. Select the IFC file and click OK. 

Note: To avoid issue when another user is opening the Revit Cloud Model on another machine, make sure that the link is stable by performing the following steps:

  1. After the link is added, wait a couple of seconds.
  2. Go to Manage Links, select the IFC link and Reload.
  3. The action of reloading the link should obtain the PermanentID for the file correctly from BIM 360.

Note: First time the users other than the one who uploaded the IFC opens the Revit model, they will need to get a local cache of the IFC file, which is done by reloading the link.
This is a one time process.
