Issue:

After importing a STEP assembly file in Inventor and saving the file, the Data Standard dialog is shown and for each component the path needs to be entered individually. The imported files should be placed into a specified folder.

Causes:

The STEP file was imported with standard options.

Solution:

Follow these steps to import the STEP file into a specified folder:

First step, is to create a folder in Vault where the step files should be placed:
  1. Create a folder at the desired path.

Vault Client - Context menu showing New Standard Folder entry in Vault browser panel..

  1. Right-Click the created folder > Go To Working Folder (in this sample the folder was named "Step import"; keep the path as short as possible)
Second, import the STEP file in Inventor:

Inventor - showing the Place Imported CAD Files menu entry.

  1. In the Import dialog, Select User Path.

Inventor - Import dialog box with selected User Path option in the drop-down list.

  1. Navigate to the created folder.

Inventor - Browse for folder dialog box with STEP import folder selected.

  1. Disable "Save In Subfolder" option > OK.

Inventor - Import dialog box with the highlighted Output location showing the path and disabled Save In Subfolder option.

  1. Save the file.

Inventor - Save dialog box highlighting the STEP import portion of the path for the files to be saved.

  1. The specified path will be used in the Data Standard dialog box.
