Issue:

IFC file exported from Revit cannot be opened in Revit, program crashes or a text document will be opened in a text editor.

Causes:

IFC has a text structure to store the definitions in a data file, so it can be opened and read in text editors. However, the geometry can be displayed if the file is opened with the appropriate IFC viewer or software. If a double-click on the IFC file is used to open it, not the right software or settings may be used by default.

Solution:

IFC files should be opened in Revit by using the home page and Open IFC option or linked through the Insert menu/ Link IFC.

Follow the steps:
1. Open Revit.
2. Create a Revit new project or use an existing one.
3. Go to File -> Open -> IFC to open the file

or Insert Tab-> Link IFC to link the file.
