How to use Process Monitor (Procmon) for troubleshooting software issues

Issue:

You want to have step by step instructions on how to use procmon for troubleshooting purposes.

Solution:

  1. Download Process Monitor here.
  2. Run Process Monitor (Procmon).
  3. Stop Capture. (CTRL + E) / File > Capture Events and check off.

  1. Clear the display. (CTRL + X) / Edit > Clear.
  2. Start Capture. (CTRL + E) / File > Capture Events and check on.
  3. Reproduce the issue (with the Autodesk Product).
  4. Stop Capture. (CTRL + E) / File > Capture Events and check off.
  5. Save the file. (CTRL + S) > Choose All Events.

  1. Compress the file.  Send to Compress Folder.

Note: If it will take more than a few seconds to reproduce the issue, filters need to be utilized to reduce the information being captured, and the Drop Filtered events option enabled so that the amount of information being captured doesn't overload the system resources (leading to a crash):
