How to annotate or dimension a 3D object in AutoCAD

Issue:

When trying to annotate a 3D object in AutoCAD with a 3D model, the dimensions either end up on the incorrect plane or the dim text is not shown in the right direction. 

Solution:

  1. Open the OPTIONS dialog.
  2. Switch to the Drafting Tab.
  3. At the bottom of the window, check Replace Z value with current elevation.
  4. Press OK. 
  • Place dimension using UCS: 

  1. Go to Home Tab
  2. Hover to mouse to Coordinates panel 
  3. Click on Origin UCS UCS icon
  4. Place the UCS on the object face where the dimension needs to be added 
  5. Go to Annotate Tab
  6. Click on Dimension 
  7. Place the dimension where is needed
