"Unhandled exception... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when opening files in AutoCAD

Issue:

When opening specific files in AutoCAD, the following error is displayed:

Error message appears when opening a specific file in AutoCAD
Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
 

Causes:

The drawing file has become corrupted.

Solution:

Do the following to attempt to fix the issue:
  1. Open a blank drawing in AutoCAD.
  2. Enter RECOVER on the command line.
  3. Navigate to the faulty file and select it.
