“Install error: Autodesk Revit 2021 The installation couldn’t finish. Error 15” when installing Revit 2021

Issue:

When installing Revit 2021, it fails with the below message:

Install error: Autodesk Revit 2021
The installation couldn't finish.
Error 15

Error: The installation couldn't finish. Error 15

Causes:

Previous corrupted installation. 

  • The installer could not install the "OpenStudio CLI for Revit 2021" component during the installation process with the Install.log (in %localappdata%/Autodesk/ODIS) showing: 
Failed to install Package (upi2:  {E0670352-252C-4477-9098-FD4F277639C6} name: OpenStudio CLI For Revit )  Error Code:  1602  Exit Status: 17
  • The installer could not install the "Autodesk Unit Schemas for Revit 2021" component during the installation process with the Summary.log (in %localappdata%/Autodesk/ODIS) showing:

Solution:

In order to install the software:

 

  1. Go to "Programs and Features" in "Control Panel".
  2. Remove all the Revit 2021 components left in the system.
  3. Download Microsoft Troubleshooter (also known as Microsoft Fix-It).
  4. Remove any other residual Revit 2021 components using Microsoft Troubleshooter. 
  5. Install OpenStudio CLI for Revit 2021 manually:
    1. Find the Revit 2021 installer files:
      • If you already have the files locally, the location of these files can be modified when starting the Revit installation (By default in C:\Autodesk\Revit_2021_G1_Win_64bit_dlm).
      • If the installer files folder is not found:
        1. Re-download the Revit installer (using the Direct Download option).
        2. Run the installer (extracting the installation files to the default location, or custom location).
        3. After extracting the files, the Revit installation will start automatically. Cancel this installation to continue with the steps below.
    2. Find the OpenStudio installer in the ..\x64\OpenStudio\ folder (within the Revit installation files folder).
    3. Run the OpenStudio-CLI-4r.msi file to install the "OpenStudio CLI for Revit 2021" component.
  6. Install Autodesk Unit Schemas for Revit 2021 manually:
    1. Find the Revit 2021 installer files:
      • If you already have the files locally, the location of these files can be modified when starting the Revit installation (By default in C:\Autodesk\Revit_2021_G1_Win_64bit_dlm).
      • If the installer files folder is not found:
        1. Re-download the Revit installer (using the Direct Download option).
        2. Run the installer (extracting the installation files to the default location, or custom location).
        3. After extracting the files, the Revit installation will start automatically. Cancel this installation to continue with the steps below.
    2. Find the RevitUnitSchemas installer in the ..\x64\RS\ folder (within the Revit installation files folder).
    3. Run the RevitUnitSchemas.msi file to install the "Autodesk Unit Schemas for Revit 2021" component.
  7. Start the Revit 2021 installation.
