"Open Comm (COM1) The system cannot find the file specified" when starting Fabrication Tracker or Trackit

Issue:

When starting Fabrication Tracker, or the older Trackit module, the software looks for a COM port that doesn't exist, and display the following message:

Open Comm (COM1)
The system cannot find the file specified

There are no physical serial/COM ports on the computer available.
When clicking "OK" the software starts anyway.

Causes:

Tracker is listening on an invalid COM port number.

Solution:

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

  1. When the message occurs, click "OK".
  2. Click File > Options.
  3. Click the "Serial Mode" tab.
  4. Do one of the following depending on your needs:
  • If the bar code scanner is not connected through a COM port, disable "Enable Serial Mode":

  • If the bar code scanner is connected to a COM port, in the "Port" drop-down list select the next available COM number:

  • Note: The COM port number may vary, the number itself is assigned by the operating system.
  • Note: When using a device connected through COM port, the other COM settings such as "Baud Rate" must match the ones in the scanner.
For technical support regarding the scanner itself, get in touch with the device manufacturer.
  1. Click "OK".
