Issue:

This article provides suggestions on how to troubleshoot situations where Autodesk Inventor is unstable, freezes, crashes, or hangs (on restart, opening, saving or during use).

The following message might appear when Inventor is crashing:

Autodesk Inventor Error Report

A software problem has caused Inventor to close unexpectedly.
(...)
Autodesk Inventor Error Report

Or

Autodesk Inventor has stopped working (...)

Causes:

Autodesk Inventor can crash for several reasons, such as:
  • Recent Windows update.
  • System file corruption.
  • Model file corruption.
  • Windows user profile corruption.
  • Old graphics card drivers.
  • Add-ins not working.
  • Etc.....

Solution:

Check the form below which may lead to a more direct solution based on answers:

Guide: Troubleshooting Inventor stability, crash and hanging issues

Possible actions to be taken:

(Actions described in points from A to G are the most common solutions.)

  1. Install the latest graphics (video display) drivers.

    • Many Inventor stability issues are related to out-of-date or corrupt video drivers. Compare the video drivers currently installed with the latest available from the hardware vendor.

    • Ensure that the latest drivers are installed. See How do I check that I have the latest video drivers installed?.
    • If the latest drivers are installed, reinstall them. Windows updates regularly brake components used by the graphics drivers. Reinstalling or repairing the same, latest drivers can fix many stability issues.

    • Make sure that the software is using high-performance graphics instead of the default graphics card. How to configure Autodesk software to use high-performance graphics

    1. Check Antivirus software settings (This situation occurs when upgrading to a newer version of Inventor).

      1. Disable or uninstall Antivirus software.

      2. If the previous step solves the problem, then use the following article to change Antivirus settings. See Working with Inventor and Antivirus software.

    1. Ensure that Inventor and Vault have the latest updates applied.

    2. Sign in Windows as another user.

      • Run Inventor by right-click as administrator. If this is resolved the issue, then look for the solution in Windows user access, permissions.

      • Try logging into Windows as a different user (use local Windows user for tests not domain). If the Windows User Profile is corrupted, it might not happen when logged in to the same machine but as a different user. It might be a solution for the Administrator to delete the user profile.

      1. Reset Inventor

      1. Update the 3D mouse driver with the latest available drivers on the website.

      1. Eliminate the possibility of an Add-in causing the issue.

        1. Disable as many Inventor Add-ins as possible. See How do I disable the Inventor Addins?.

        2. Change their load behavior and deselect the Load Automatically tick box.

        3. Restart Inventor.
        4. Reproduce the issue.

        5. If the issue no longer occurs, re-enable one module at a time, retest, until the specific Inventor add-in causing the problem has been isolated.

        6. If the issue can be easily reproduced, try using a process of elimination to isolate the cause.

      1. When some additional add-ins are used in Inventor the following issues might take place.

      1. Fix all other system stability issues.

Windows Error Reporting > Systems Information.

Note: Finding solutions to those other errors might resolve the other issues as well.
Also, try How to remove and reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Libraries.

      1. Check files for bad bodies according.

See How to use the Ctrl + F7 in Inventor to find bad bodies.

      1. Sign out of the Autodesk Account and sign in again.

See How to sign out of Autodesk software.

      1. Clean the workspace by deleting the local files and redownload them from Vault.

      2. Uninstall and reinstall Inventor.

      See Clean Uninstall.

Sometimes, it may not be possible to uninstall Inventor and its related products because of a damaged Operating system which can only be resolved by reimaging the system or reinstalling Windows.

        1. After reinstalling, test the latest updates.

Apply Inventor updates one by one to see if one of those is causing the issue. See Download and install.

Note: Do not extract the MSP files from the EXE update files before applying - apply the EXE files as they are downloaded from Autodesk.

        1. Test on a clean operating system with no other software.

          1. Remove all software apart from Autodesk Inventor (with the latest updates) installed.

          2. Reinstall the Operating System.

        2. Install the latest Windows Updates also on Windows Server (if fiels are stored on server).

Windows Update failures are often a sign of instability issues on the system in general. See How to Keep Windows up-to-date.

After installing the update, a restart of the PC is required.

        1. Too long path to the files.

        2. Reinstall or install newest NetFramework.

        Gathering Information

If the above suggestions have all been tried but more help from Autodesk is needed when submitting a support case ensure that the following information is included. Answers to these questions are crucial to efficient troubleshooting:
        1. Does this affect multiple machines?

          • If not, it could be just a problem with this one machine.

        2. Does it happen on a specific model or drawing?

        • Screenshots and short movies can also be submitted.

        1. What email address is used to submit Customer Error Reports (CER)?

        • If any Autodesk product crashes, it will attempt to send crash dump information to Autodesk servers. Many of these submissions are environmental, affecting only specific environments or scene files.

        • Not every issue is fixable. It is crucial to get reproducible steps for Autodesk teams to determine the root cause.
