Issue:

What sign should be used to input manually internal forces in a steel connection "Column base" (fixed or pinned) to simulate uplift in RSA?

Solution:

Online help shows steel connection convention sign for forces .

For fixed and pinned column base steel connection, it display what is the direction of positive force to be input manually for these connections:

It can be seen that for axial force, uplift should be input as positive value.

For example, if column base steel connection in linked to model:
  • A positive value of "Nj,Ed" corresponds to uplift

  • Looking at Reactions table (at Envelope tab), it corresponds to a negative value

An uplift action is positive according Z global axis, so the reaction to it is a negative signe of reaction.
Note:
In this case, the Reaction table is set as default with unselected "Reactions in the form of Load Report" option (right-click > Table columns).
